Mike,

I agree that winches never seem to be on the right end when needed. Portable winches are great too. The winch I was planning to put on my tractor has been serving portable duty on my trailer and also on the loader for a couple of projects. I still plan on mounting it at some point. For me when I am on the land I bought there is no one around to help and I would like to have the winch to get me out of the mud if needed or worse yet the pond. Some creativity with a snatch block will hopefully work. Someone mentioned the current draw from electric winches. They do have a huge current draw, but the run time is usually not that long and you may be suprised at how long you can run one without draining a battery. Hydraulic or PTO would be much better if you plan on having long pulls. Usually to get unstuck, the pull is quite short. Just my 2 cents.

Just to add i know Ramsey makes winches with permanant magnets. These draw about 220 amps vs the wound winches (like Warn) that draw about 450 amps. I think our old 4020's had 2 batteries, maybe a 24v system, don't exactly recall. The plus on the wound motors is they can pull longer without overheating. Permanants heat up faster and the heat will damage the motor. I have Ramseys for my truck. It was a cheaper winch and I really don't care if it takes me 10 minutes or 30 to get out. IE I never will cross a rising river. I made a multi mount set up for my truck and both my ATV's have a 2500 winch with a MM setup. So far I've only used the winch to pull the boat out of the river. Here is a little info on that..

I wandered into a hydraulic shop here, was talking with the manager, when one of the guys from the back hollared at him, saying he had a problem. I went to the back with him, saw the problem, thought of a cure, and told the manager. He told me to give him a price on building them. I did, as a "cash" price. He Ok'd the deal, but before I delivered, he called, saying he needed twice the order, for another shop. I built two sets, expecting cash for both. Didn't happen. He asked me if there was anything in the shop I wanted, instead of cash. I noticed a Pro 9000 winch sitting on the shelf, and told him I wouldn't mind a nice winch for my junk truck. He pulled out a catalog and told me to pick out the one I wanted. 12K Ramsey, with all the options, including Chrome.
Never did mount that winch, it was too pretty.

RobJ,

Thanks for the good info. I do not know what type of motor is on the winch I have. The winch came off an old light duty wrecker. Without digging it out, I believe it is a Koenig. It has worked well for what I have used it for. I still hope to mount it at some point. I have thought of making a receiver type mount. Thanks again for the info.

If you have a koenig hyd you have a treasure. I have been using them for over 20 yrs for my application and haven't had any problems.
Thing is about having a winch mounted on the tractor is that you won't bury the rig trying to get it out. It will be a simple matter of hooking up to something before it is buried to the frame.
I have one mounted permently in my loader frame. I use it more than I could possibly have imagined. Anytime I am loading an emplement, picking trees, you name it, it is right there. Having a variable length cable on the front of the rig is great.

Rdbrumfield,

Mine is electric. Hydraulic would have been nice, but the price was right. I was thinking I would mount it on a hood/ grill guard on the front of the tractor, for those occasions I get in the mud. Like you said, I figured I could get it out before it got buried too bad. I am typically the only one around when I am working on the land I bought and hate the idea of sinking my tractor.

Take care,
Russ
