Advice on storing my freezer

Use lots of bleach when cleaning. The baking soda is a good idea. :D

Years ago the door thing was a real item as children would get locked into the units by accident. That's all changed now I think.

Man, it's been a long time since I've seen a latching refrigerator door, but yes, kids did get trapped and die in them. They used to recommend removing the door of any unused frig.
Dave.

Here the recycling landfill place will not accept a fridge with doors on it.

When I store my camper for winter, I love the door open. One year the closed on it own when i was moving it and forgot to check. In the spring had some mold spots and I swear it was clean and dry when I put it away. I never heard of the newpaper trick, and I never used baking soda either. I only used baking soda if freezer had something ripped open and still running. It certainly wouldnt hurt to have a box in there if door is closed.

We always winterize the camper as mentioned above:

Clean it with bleach, dry it out with a towel. Leave the door open for a couple days (or when we remember to go out there). Open a box of baking soda and shut the door. I have never sprinkled the stuff from the box.

Never tried the newspaper thing, but it can't hurt.

Iron Hammer baking soda!

All the houshold trick books and granma's secrets books quote using baking soda.

Iron Hammer now even market baking soda with a vent sided box as a refridgerator 'rejuvenator' product.

I bought some of the baking soda for the fridge boxes at Walmart, and will put them in there. The refrigerator is empty, umplugged and the doors are wide open. The freezer still has an 11 pound Greenburg smoked turky in it, but I'm giving that to my brother on Saturday, and will unplug it then and let it defrost.

I have everything in my refrigerator in my kitchen, and still have extra room. Being single, I dont need much, and what I do have, is more then enough.

If I shoot a hog, I'll probably just keep a few cuts and give the rest away to my brother. I haven't seen one in a few months, but really havn't been out looking. From what I've seen along my roads, they are still very active on my land and doing a good job of tearing up the place. LOL

Thank you,
Eddie
