Adding 4 wheels to a bush hog ??

I got out a few days ago to play with my tractor some.
I took it next door and mowed off my dads garden patch with it.
They just let it grow up with weeds and what-not at the end of the season.
I noticed where I turned around the bush hog left marks in the grass.
I know I'm supposed to raise it when turning around,
but I must not have been fast enough.
Otherwise it cuts great and will do fine for my yard.

What about adding 4 wheels to the bush hog like a finish mower.
I was thinking about wheels like this:

Scratch this idea. I went out and looked today.
Not enough room behind the back wheels to mount
wheels on the front of the bush hog.
Could mount them out to the side but that would look funny.

May have to just consider an actual finish mower.

If you don't have under the fender mounted sway bars.. get them.. it will help. When you turn fast, the cutter can lurch to one side and scalp. The kit from TSC is about 25$ or less. You get 2 angle iron brackets that comes with 2 small pins. then you buy 2 lynch pins, and 2 arms are usually hanging on the shelf. Generally your oem fender bolts are long enough to accomodate the extra 1/4 inch of metal.. hover take a looksee to see if someone swapped in short bolts.. if so.. grab some new grade 8 bolts.. 5/8 I believe.. Measure length and diameter to be sure.. as I havn't changed fender bolts in a couple years.. and don't have my parts catalog in front of me.

apart from the fact that it wont fit on your tractor is it actually a good idea
i can see bonuses in doing this

I have seen bush hogs that have 2 wheels in the back.
One on each side instead of a single center wheel.
This would be a big improvement I think.

I'm gonna try adding some chains to the front.
I think most of the problem is when I drop the deck
all the way down it sits on the ground.
It needs chains to hold it up a couple of inches.

I was looking again and if I mounted the wheels closer
together and not directly behind the tractor tires
then they mite work out ok if they can swivel without
hitting the rear tires of the tractor.

I have brackets under the rear axles on both sides
that look like sway bars could be mounted to them.
So all I really need is the sway bars.

I have been over in the other parts of this site reading
the build it yourself and other forums.
Been getting lots of ideas from this.
Now I'm wishing really hard that I had a welder.
Probably help greatly if I knew how to weld too.

go to stevenstractor.com they make a chain kit for the front to hold it up for 29.95. i made some for my old ferguson before i saw this. after limiting how far the front would drop on mine, it cuts as good as finish mower. i had the same problem.

Ditto on the chains. i made a kit for my old fords.. works great to limit max depth.

As for the poster thinking about dual tail wheels. Lots of larger mowers have them.. as well as mowers for smaller tractors.. to give stability.. etc.

I looked at a finish mower a few days ago.
The guy wants $250 for it. He is getting a belt for it
and is gonna bring it to my house ready to use.
It has one slightly bent wheel assembly.
I will straighten that, but it can still be used like it is.
The wheel just won't rotate all the way around.
So I'm just gonna forget about adding wheels to the bushhog.
Not needed now.

pooh bear,can you rig up a set of rollers like they have on riding mowers,they would help as far as scalping goes,I have a woods finish mower and it just has the two rear wheels,but woods offers a roller for the front so I think I'm going to get one,It has the chains but it don't always work for humps that end up in the middle of the mower deck and it ends up scalping,so I need to get the roller.
