A turtle lay on her back sunning herself on the pavement

When they built a by-pass around Mt. Union, PA they discovered that there was a turtle migration from the Juniata River to the other side of the new road. People were hitting so many turtles that there was actually a public outcry to do something. They built a couple of miles of very low chain link fence to deflect the turtles and it ended the problem. Don't know how the turtles feel about a change in plans each spring but the outcome is still highly positive for them.

I had a Biology professor back in the day that did a study on this. He put a fake turtle in the road and hid in the woods to observe. All vehicles either stopped and tried to move the turtle or made a great effort to swerve around the turtle .

Then he did the same thing with a fake snake. Most vehicles attempted to run over the snake . The rest swerved but made little effort to actually miss the snake .

I am not suprised. However, what would have happened if someone had a wreck due to his "experiment". Not a good idea in my opinion.

Possible Mo I suppose . College professors really aren 't noted for thinking things through from beginning to end . For all I know, he may have been working under a government grant .

Sounds more like a psychology experiment than a biology one. It isn't the animals' response or behaviour that he is testing in that scenario.

Sure, I didn 't mean it any other way . But, humans are in the biological world also .
