I do wish Toyota would improve their MPG ratings -- they are about 3-5 MPG lower than Ford and GM when you compare equivalent V8 engines/drivelines, both city and highway MPG. That was one of the knocks against an otherwise fine truck when I was shopping around. The Ford and GM middle-displacement V8 engines are rating up near 22-23 mpg highway.

I get better out of this truck than I did my 04 Chevy with a 5.3 ;however, you have to be disciplined to get it. There is so much go in the go pedal in the Tundra that it's hard to stay out of it and just cruise.

The thing is, since then the 5.3 has gotten major improvements and now is rated 23mpg highway for 2wd and 22mpg 4wd in the 2014 models (and it's realistic from what I have seen). Ford has made similar gains with their V8. I really hope Toyota improves in this area.

I've got an '07, 5.7, double cab, 4X4 with 107,000 miles on the clock, bought new. Brakes and transmission flush at 90,000 and routine oil changes at 7500/10,000 miles. No issues; will tow two tractors on a Bri-Mar 14,000# trailer comfortably. Est. # is in the 12,500/13,000 range. I live in a fairly rural area in Maine with no significant driving intown; mileage is a tic better than 17 on state/county roads with speed limits of from 35 to 50 mph and interstate mileage of 19+ if you can keep it under 70 mph. The average interstate speed is closer to 75 and over and you either keep up or get run over; mileage at these speeds run in the 18mpg range. These are hand calculated as the truck has no "dream meter". As to comparing it's towing capability to GM/Ford/Dodge, I see no comparison. I owned GM's for years, always ordered with 4.10 ratio gears and then got foolish and bought an '05 F150 Lariat SuperCrew that I kept 14 mths. Hated that truck, was just about useless with a trailer in tow, traded on the Tundra. Just as an aside, I'm 72yrs old and still like that loud pedal

It seams to me that Toyota would rather get slightly less mileage but longer life expectancy out of their engines than some of the other brands. My 00' Tundra is closing in on 200k and doesn't burn a drop of oil even though I have worked it very hard over the years. It only sees a little over 1000 miles a year now otherwise I wouldn't hesitate one bit in replacing it with another Tundra.

I know several people who have Tundras. 2 of them have well over 300k miles on them and they've done nothing to them. They still sound like new.

That's why I bought mine. I'm old and will never wear it out.

I had an 07, but due to an increase in passengers (4 kiddos) I bought my 2011 with the front bench. I had buckets in the 07. I haven't towed much weight, still have to throw in my Tekonsha P3 brake controller. Only mods I did to either one was BFG All Terrains, I hated the stockers. One thing I've been considering is a cap for the bed to give me storage with all the kids on board.

My Dad always busted my chops about having a Japanese truck, until I showed him the report that my Tundra had more domestic parts on board than his F-150.

I have taken the Tundra plant tour in San Antonio and was very impressed. 58 trucks off the line every hour. (Tundra & Tacoma).

Amazing they can effectively build a truck in 1 min.
