Stopped this morning to see how things were coming with the IH, the motor and head are expected back this week and then the rebuild will begin. One pic shows a pitted sleeve, another a cylinder in pretty rough shape, the tractor in half, and the last pic of me in tears. (just kidding)!!
I will pic up the radiator this week and take it to be cleaned and recored if needed. Hopefully by the fourth week of Sept I will be out plowing and discing with it again.

No, a local dairy farmer who works on old Olivers and IH tractors. He has a very good reputation for doing a decent job and being honest. He's one of these guys who grew up working on tractors and now is talking about hanging up the farming and doing repair work full time.

How bad was the pitting in the sleeve? Was it from cavitation?

When I rebuilt the diesel engine on my dozer, everyone said to add the solution to the water to prevent cavitation. Said it was real important to do so, which of course I did. Did you have anything in the water to stop this? If not, what else would have caused the pitting? and how long do thing until it would have become a problem?

What was wrong with the engine that made you go for the full rebuild?

Thanks,
Eddie

The pitting Eddie was from cavitation. I only had used the tractor for about 10 hrs when I started to have problems with it overheating. I flushed the radiator, changed the water filter, cleaned the fins with a foaming type AC cleaner and put in Wixcool, a cooling system treatment. None of that helped, it was to little to late. Who ever had it before me, somebody from the midwest, seems to have done very little maintenance on the tractor. The main and rod bearings were worn down to the copper. The major overhaul was decided on because the mechanic thought that the crankshaft would have to be reground and oversize bearings would have to be put in. That is now not going to be the case so the regular bearings will be used.
I picked the radiator up yesterday and took it to a shop that tests radiators, it will probably have to be recored.
On a positive note I was told that a new clutch was put in the tractor and that is the case and the TA works well. It was slipping a bit, the mechanic said that the problem is sometimes a small spring that stretches to much, he replaced the spring and the TA works fine again.

More "good news" on the 1066, radiator was bad so had it recored. Shop that did the recoring said he's seen lots of radiators from old IH tractors that didn't last, probably again due to poor maintenance.
Cost of recoring will be about $650, new Case/IH radiator about $1600, aftermarket radiator about $800.
Sure hope my soybean crop is a winner.

Keep us posted, and more pics please, especially with the black smoke Rollin'!! The 66 series is my all time fav IH, and especially love the 1066.

Good luck, hope the beans do well.

BTW, where in PA are you from?? Sis and BIL live in Harrisburg, down there every summer for the 4th of July week. See tons of farms on the way down, beautiful scenery to say the least!!
