Ted--I would strongly recommend looking into some FEA software to use in the design of your equipment. I understand that a small company can not afford the biggest and best software with all the bells and whistles. Perhaps there is a moonlighter friend using FEA or there are plenty design service companies around the world.
For those not familiar with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) it is a tool used with CAD (Computer Aided Design) to evaluate stress areas in a component or assembly. Just for example, a load of 5000 pounds could be applied to one ripper shank and the software shows the stress areas in color graduations. (Somewhat like a storm cell is shown with radar on your computer)
While it is true that nothing can replace experience and common sense, I found that designs could be optimized with the least amount of steel. This was using ProE CAD along with ANsys FEA on my job prior to retirement. It's an amazing tool!
