Well, the good news is that I waited till the end of the day before swapping out the planer knives with a new set. I managed to get a lot done before then: rewired a lighting circuit, replaced a shoddy drywall section with a much better piece, and cleaned the entire shop. And I did manage to replace the planer knives just fine. But bloodshed was involved. When instructions refer to a part being sharp it's usually semi-sharp, which leads me to believe the warning is there for lawyers. Planer blades are an exception. Those knives were so sharp I just rested my pinky on one and laid it open for two inches! Yikes! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif No stitches needed, but jeez!

That is what comes from so many manufactures yelling wolf. No one believes when we are being warned for a good reason.
Take care of the cut. You don't need an infection.
You don't have a pair of Kevlar gloves?

Pete, sorry to hear you got bit, usually happens to me setting them up. Coincidentally I dropped off one set of planer knives and two sets of joiner knifes to be sharpened at my local spend every dime you make woodworking shop. I cautioned the young feller behind the counter to be careful and simultaneous with his remark "these knives are here to be sharpened" he got bit somewhat like you. Sounds like you are enjoying your new shop.

Thanks, Al. Yes, I have a lot of fun out there creating sawdust! So far all the projects have been for the shop itself: shelving, clamp racks, a loft, and door or window trim. But the Wife has grand plans for the bathroom, kitchen, etc. Guess I ought to gain some experience making shop cabinets so my mistakes are made on cheap pine instead of the maple and cherry she had in mind!

Pete I admire any guy that can work with wood. I took one year of wood-shop in high-school and quickly transferred over to metal-shop. I can beat the heck out of steel and still get good results, found early on that doesn't work with wood.

I just wish I had a proper shop and one of those large planers. Might even move a cot and coleman stove in.
