Hi, Newby here. First time tractor owner. Bought a 1940 9N to have as an entry level machine. Love the old thing.
So after a little light use I soon realized that the hydraulics on the three point needed help. First I checked the Lift cylinder assembly. The seal surfacses were very scratched up. Rebuilt that assembly. Helped some but it still had a little trouble lifting my Gannon blade, especially after warming up good. So I decided to rebuild the Hydraulic pump. Bought a complete kit from "Yesterdays Tractors" on line. All that said, here is what I ran into.
First the pump chambers that I got with the kit were shaped slightly different such that when they were mounted on the pump frame the whole assembly would fit back up into the hole in the case. I had to remove some material from both the outside surface of the chambers and some material from the edges of two the the bolt bosses that are cast into the case.
Also, when I got the chambers they had set screws installed to plug machining access holes. On one of them I had to remove them and put them in the other side of the part so that the oil holes in the chamber would line up with the ones in the frame.
So I got it all put back together, which went real smooth, filled it with 303 oil, and .....nothing! The PTO was engaged and running quietly but the unit did not lift at all. Showed no motion at all. My first thought was that the control valve had come loose. Pulled the plug out and the control valve was right where it should be.
I guess my questions are: do I need to prime the pump somehow?
Did I screw up by changing the set screws to the other side?
I'm not sure what direction to go to find my problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
