JD 990
Does any one have any information, or know how, on how to "stiffen" the foot throttle on a 990?? Mine is VERY,VERY touchy! The tractor itself is brand new, and I was just wondering if anyone else had any thoughts, or had similar problems.
I was even thinking of cutting the throttle shorter. Sometimes I have found that my foot hits the throttle bar when I want to hit the brake pedals.
Thanks.

To be honest with you I don't use the foot throttle very much I set the hand throttle to the needed RPM's/HP and go .... I found that the rough bouncing around out in the field made the use of the pedal hard to control .... So far it works for me ....

Stiffer spring? Anyway I saw one of the new 990s in the shop today. Boy was I happy to see one in person! The changes are:

Different engine parts such as radiator overflow tank placement and design same for fuel filter, a little different look to the whole motor.

MFWD lever is mover to the kickplate like the 4000 ten series. Mine by the range shift.

Different seat suspension. Mine is adjustable it looks like your is not since the seat base design was changed.

Dual SCV hookup not painted anymore.

No vertical exhaust

And that seems to be it at first glance. Mine is unchanged from the original 70 series so it's a little more me.

So I guess that I wasn't crazy about the seat being diffenet? I know that when I had sat on a seat last year it vfelt alot better that mine does now! Your opinion? I like the older styl;e suspension, and last night located it in the parts catalog. I think tyhat the part number for the whole unit was AM877063, but I didn't get a price. Can you find out if I can change mine? Thanks.

I did not know they had changed the seat suspension for the new 990s until I saw one yesterday. Did your 790 have the old style seat? My 790 had the same seat as my 990 does. The list price for the seat suspension is $652.40. That's a lot of money. The new number for the part is AM878860. It looks like it might fit but I am unsure from the drawings. You will have to look at your old 790 then at the 990 to see if the mounting holes are in the same spot. Maybe your dealer would let you swap seat mounts and then you would have it like you want. The un springy seat was the first thing I noticed when I hopped on the tractor but I could not see an adjustment anyware. The suspension on the new 990s is the two springs in back of the seat since there is no more scissor style suspension. That's why I hate Deere they take the good things about a particular model and mess with it to save money. I get so mad when I see that at work with all the new products. They had the 990 perfectly unchanged for 15 years why change now.

My 790 had the same style seat as the new 990. I had sat on the "old" 990, which I guess is what you currently have. The style that you have is MUCH more comfortable than the 790-990 seat that I now have. It sounds stupid, but the seat was one of the selling points for me to go to the 990. I do alot of mowing fields and it does get hard feeling after awhile. I'll talk to my dealer, however, they had to order my 990, so I think that I might be out of luck, and its not worth that kind of money for the seat.
Thanks for looking into this for me.

No problem. I had mine ordered too but my used tractor sat for a while so I wondered if they still had yours. You must have had a newer 790 then because my 790 was a 2000 model year. Another alternative here is to wait until your dealer takes in a older 70 series like a 870, 970, or 1070 and grab that seat suspension. Also see if your dealer can return the old seat suspension from your tractor now as it should look like new and then they will give you a credit and use that money to buy the new suspension and put your old suspension in the box and return it. I was just poking around the parts catalog to see how much they had changed between our tractors and A LOT has changed, air filter is different number and just a whole bunch of parts have serial number breaks. If you thought the seat on the old 990 was good sit on an older 4000 series. Really soft and I had arm rests on my old 4300. The new 4000 ten series seats are not nearly as comfortable anymore.

Is the BASIC tractor still the same. The front axle is marked 970-1070 like you said it would be. I was looking at the engine earlier and the date of 2003 was on it. The only two main differences that I noticed are the seat and the exhaust. The exhaust seems to be fine, with no fumes, unless your going very slow in a close or confined area. No worse that my 790 was with the top exhaust.
Qestion- Can the toolbox from a 970 filt on the 990?? And is the box still avaiable?

Can you check one thing for me? Look at your motor and in the model number tag on top of the motor it should read someting like 4TNE84 which is the old motor I have from the JD 1070 or yours should be marked 4TNV84. Note the V instead of the E as mine has. They changed something. That's why our parts are all different. Go to the JD parts catalog as you have and see all the different parts some for the E and some for the V motor. If yours is not 4TNV84 I will be very suprised.

I am unsure if the tool box will work you mentioned.

The tool box from our 970 goes by the 3 point hitch and will not work. It is actually the first mod I looked into since we have a 970 and I noticed it was missing on the 990. The 970 has a welded plate the box connects to on the roll bar our tractors do no have this plate. The kit listed in the parts manual is not the one my 970 has. I can't get a good enough picture to see where that box mounts. It could be the one I am thinking of but they have changed the design.

Our tractors still should be pretty close except the engines if you have the new 4TNV84. Oh ya your hydraulic loader valve the dual scv is on the opposite side of mine now. Mine is left hand yours is right. There are different parts so if you order replacement parts be sure the parts dude follows the serial number breaks.

I just went and looked, you are correct mine has the "V" instead of the "E" Makes you wonder what JD is up to! Maybe it has something to do with emmisions, I don't know. The manual that came with the tractor lists the older engine 4TNE84-EJKM but it was printed in 2000.
I still do not know the solution for the very sensitive foot throttle. I looked at it more closely and maybe I can add an additional spring to the shaft to stiffen it up a bit.
