My 966 has started to slip when I select low range in a moderate pull. Can anyone offer any insight ? I am mechanically inclined, however it appears to be quite a project

If the TA slips in TA mode, the sprag in the TA unit is failing, or has failed. You can run it in Direct Drive without worry, or replace the TA unit. TA replacement requires a double split of the tractor, and should be accompanied by a complete overhaul of the multiple Control Valve and maybe a MCV pump replacement, IPTO gear replacement, and main clutch.

Check the MCV valve for operation as well as hydraulic pressures. Often the pump will cause the failure!

If the TA is slipping in TA mode, the sprag is junk, period. He can test all he wants. Hydraulic pressure is not required to drive the tractor in TA. Hydraulics engage a small low side clutch pack designed to prevent freewheeling in TA mode, not drive the tractor. If the sprag has failed, the low side clutch pack won't live long. Direct Drive is a different story, a faulty MCV pump or circuit will cause a Direct Drive clutch pack failure.
