I just stripped a 15mm gear wrench and bent my only other 15 mm box wrench and didn't get a single cap bolt to budge - surely these bolts mounting the drive shaft to the flywheel aren't reverse threads and if not, what's the trick to getting them out? My buckets down and I don't currently have a lift or I suppose I could raise it and tow to the garage and use an impact wrench. Any other suggestions - there is so little room to work.

If LocTite was used, apply some heat to them. Then a 6 pt socket.

Yes and thanks for the tech advice. I am a physics teacher/basketball coach and have really avoided social media - sorry if I didn't do things right. I have a good learning curve. Working on cars and trucks haven't ever been a problem - the mechanical part of engines, brakes, etc make sense. New to tractors and hydraulics but I'm learning. Got to get a trailer, hoist and a few other things to get this small farm running - we are using this as a way to stay busy after the retirement bug hits! Thanks again for your help and support.

Good to have you here. Even physics teacher's/basketball coach's are more than welcome to learn along with the rest of us. :)

You certainly don't want to bust the bolts but maybe an impact wrench turned down to reduce force and a 6-point socket? Sometimes just the impact will break it loose without using excessive torque.

took a small butane torch and heated the heads, tapped them hard with a long bar and hammer then applied a great amount of rotational force with a 24" x 1/2 breaker bar using my foot to stabilize the socket extension - once each one broke they came out by hand. It was 67 degrees and raining but it felt good to get them out! Now have to wait for the new shaft. Thanks for your help and concern.

OK got the shaft and u-joint, picked up new bolts...what is the trick to getting the the shaft on to both the transmission spline shaft and the flywheel? Spent 30 minutes wiggling, pushing, etc - before the rain started - and kept getting the u-joint hung up above the transmission shaft. I can clearly see both ends and I can clearly see the space limitations - got to be a soultion to get the alignment right without taking off the rubber mounting plate on the flywheel! I'm thinking two sets of hands????
