Well I played around with it last night. The spring tension is so strong that a bungie cord would have to be pulled very tight to keep the discharge chute deflector in the up position.

A wedge of wood, on the other hand, looks like a good answer if it doesn't get knocked out. It should also be pretty friendly to the paint finish and would easily fit inside the toolbox so I'd always have it handy. I'm thinking of making up 2 blocks just in case? Or maybe drilling a hole in the block to attach a string to it with a clip on the other end of the string, that way if it gets knocked out of position the string would keep it from falling away from the tractor and getting lost in the dirt, etc.

I took the guard off for sneaking between trees. Yes you need to watch your body parts. Take deck off for any serios loader work or you will bang it up. you'll become used to the ground clearance with it on-watch out for tree stumps(the low ones). Deck is overbuilt for finish mowing but not made for ramming.

Yea, I kinda figured that it needs to come off for the real jobs, but I have a bigger tractor with a toothbar on the bucket that already took care of the heavy dirt work.

I am thinking of removing the chute completely and replacing it with a rubber chute? Until I do that, if I do that, I'll be using a block of wood to hold it up when I don't want it in the way.

I took my gaurd off & haven't missed it. I would recommend a small modification, especially if you have uneven terrain. I don't remember how much hit cost, but it wasn't much at all.

Well I decided the answer is to remove to chute. I've been using a block to hold it up out of the way and decided to test it with the chute up while mowing. The grass does seem to spray out of the deck in a wider pattern than when the chute is down, but it doesn't seem like the chute would actually prevent anything from flying out of the deck so I don't think thre really is a safety issue with taking it off. I also don't mow when anyone is around, so if something were to fly I don't see a big issue with that. Someday I might get around to fabricating a rubber chute for it, but until then, I'm just taking it off.

Does NH make a mulching kit for the side-discharge mower?

NH offer Gator Blades for the 914A MMM. They can also be purchased many places on the web. These seem to have a love/hate reputation here on TractorByNet. Check them out.
