I think I've read somewhere that some people have cut off a portion of the rear of the deck to get the grass out quicker. Maybe like 1 1/2" off the back lower most lip ? I wanna know if this is worth doing..what the results were..and if you were happy with it. Sounds like it might work better. Thanks.

Well, I don't have an answer to your question, but I've been watching it for a while, and thought, to be polite, you ought to have some response.
But, I must ask, why do you want to get the grass "out quicker"? Is this a clogging issue or ....? Up to a point, the longer it "stays in", the better it gets "mulched".

I purchased a 72" 914 A rear discharge in 2007, I was not happy with the discharge of the grass so I cut off about 1 1/4" off of the tail deflector. That made a noticeable improvement, but in tall grass it would fill up underneath and bog down so I cut out the back half of the center baffle and removed more of the tapered back sections on the left and right baffles. Now I can mow 10" to 12" grass with no problems. The last improvement was gator blades from New Holland about $70 at the time. I beleive that the deck is not tall enough for good airflow, I think the design of the tractor limits this deminision. I am happy with this mower, much easier to mow with than the side discharge that I sold. I am trying to attach a picture of Kubota's rear discharge mower, the small inner baffle I would like to add to my center blade to see if there is any improvment.

Thanks Welshman and Boomer. Yes..the idea was for getting the grass out a little quicker. If you do a search on the 914A rear discharge, you'll find alot of people are having that problem. I just recently purchased a set of Gator blades (about $34 each) from my local NH dealer. They seemed to help immensely, but I'm still struggling with the idea of keeping all that grass under there without shooting it out. It seems like sometimes it just doesnt disperse it quick enough. I figured removing part of the rear lip would let it "air" out a little better.

I've been watching this post also. I have a 914A rear discharge 72" and am quite happy with it. I have always had it set to cut at the max height, and never had a problem with clumping or other discharge issues. I use the high lift blades. Don't know if this helps you at all, but figured I'd throw my two cents worth in. Greg

Sure..we'd all be fine cutting at max height, but I'm looking to be able to cut fairly low..so I dont hafta do it that often. I mow 3 acres, and am not enthused about doing it every other day...lol.

This is kind of off-topic, but I noticed the 914A designation and thought I'd drop in. I have a 60" 914A, side discharge, and I note there apparently is a 54" 914A as well. One would think they'd have a different model no. for all these variations, no? Or an add-on, like 914A-72. Seems a bit confusing.

As well, since I've barged in, I notice some discussion of different blades available for these, I'm assuming from New Holland. Does anyone have time to describe some of these?

Thanks,

Tom
