Mowing 914A Mid-Mount Mower Blade Removal

Are the bolts holding the blades on metric? They're bigger than 3/4" and smaller than 7/8". I can't get them to move with an adjustable so I planned to use the impact wrench but I don't have a socket to fit it. I don't own any metric sockets that are that large.

I thought that seemed like an odd size, that's why I was thinking metric. Thanks, the grass has been getting long but I was holding off putting the mower on until I got the blades off and sharpened.

Yup 13/16 and you will need the impact wrench to get them off....

Yeah and you may need something to hold the pulleys also. Otherwise they will just spin. Once you have them off once they are not so bad but that first time is a tough one.

I use a 2"x4"x18" block of wood wedged between the mower deck diverter/curved frame members and the blade to block the blade from rotating. that and a cheater bar on the 13/16" wrench works great.

Anyone out there had there blade unwind and set itset down on the ground, bolt and all when turning off the PTO? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That teaches you to use the cheater bar when putting the blade back on, too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, I got a 13/16" socket, stuck it on the impact gun and thought I had her licked.

I tried the first one, then the second and finally the third before I got one off. I tried the forward/reverse trick to break them bolts loose to no avail. I put WD40 on the bolts and let them sit for an hour+. I still can't get them off.

Any ideas?

My air gun won't take mine off either. But my extra long ½" torque wrench will /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The couple times my bolts wouldn't loosen with an impact gun, I used a long pipe and a breaker bar. Ever since then I've used anti-sieze on the bolt threads, and they buzz'd right off.

Boomerboy's idea of blocking the blades is also worth doing, and probably safer. But I just wore a thick pair of work gloves and grab the trailing edge of the blade while busting the bolts loose.

Even using the block of wood the inside shaft will still turn. I use a cheater bar, block of wood and will even lock a vice grip on the pulley tight inside the belt. That seems to work the best for me. And once I have off and re-installed, I will mow once then lift my deck up again and re-tighten. That way I don't worry so much about them coming loose.
