my hydraulics on my 1950 Ford 8n have just stopped working.
I have read many threads and have a fairly good understanding.
The one question I have is about the PTO. It is not turning or engaging.
So this leads me to think it is my problem. I have flushed my fluids, inspected
lift cam and push rod.(replaced gaskets in lift cam three years ago) They all check out, I can visibly see pumps working, pump shaft seems to push fluids.
Lever for PTO engagement is right. Any suggestions, I am taking it all apart again this morning. Thanks

If your hydraulic pump is turning and the PTO output shaft is not, the PTO shaft is broken between the hydraulic pump and rear support bearing. But if the 3pt isn't working AND the PTO output shaft isn't turning, I'm thinking there is a problem with the PTO shifter or sliding coupler.

:welcome:
Do you have the I&T booklet for this tractor?

Do you know how it is supposed to work when correct?

Are you planning to pull the PTO shaft and pump out (when you say you are taking it all apart again) ?

I do not have the book, When I said pull it apart I meant drain and start inspecting again.
I was wondering about the PTO shaft and connection.
Is this under gear shifter?
Do I need to get into that area.
How intense is this process for a rookie?.
When i try to enegage the PTO with out the clutch it starts to grind so I was assuming my connection is good. I can see that it is engaging properly with the lever. This was all working fine this winter. I use this for snow removal only. When I was going to move it to its summer resting place, she started right up and then I pulled the lift handle and nothing happened.
Everything worked fine during our last snow fall here in Michigan.
oil was milky, replaced it. spot checked what i know. lost now

Well I have spent the time and effort to redrain the unit.
All three this time. Just prior to that I rechecked by starting the engine and the PTO is functioning. ROOKIE!!!
So now I am leaning toward pressure relief valve but am unsure where it is located. I now can't start my tractor. All it does is click. Battery is fine.
I am heading to TSC to get solinoid hoping my starter is not fried.
Wish me luck!!!

Slow down and hang onto your hat, and get the I&T manual before going too far, too fast.

I believe there are inspection/cover plates on both sides under the seat (like my TO-30 Ferguson had) and the book will tell you how to check the linkage without draining the oil and without removing the pump. This is a "check first" item in the book. Also, you can inspect if the hyd. oil is leaking (before draining the oil :) ).

The book will tell how to proceed if the pump needs removing. Pull the PTO shaft, and drop the pump out the bottom tranny pan.

Thanks, You are right I do need to slow down. Not my best day. I have the manual and will be reading it this evening. Looks like my starter is out.
So first things first I guess. Any suggestions on getting this rebuilt here in Michigan?

Tell us a bit about how you decided the starter needs to be rebuilt?
i.e. What testing or isolation of the starter problem pointed to the starter not working?

I only ask, as it may be something else (friend of mine with a Ford 600 asked for help to get his starter off, and before we removed it, I remember tracing down a solonoid problem, not a starter problem). Have you jumped power directly to the starter...by-passing the solonoid and switch?

Where in MI ?

Brighton Mich. And yes I did do some isolating with the starter and solonoid.
I jumped directly to the starter and by passed the solonoid, and when I knocked on the starter it almost wanted to turn over.
I did remove the starter and it smells burnt and looks as though I over worked it this past winter when I couldn't get Old Henry started. I had to take the carburetor off and blow it out. Vapor locked or clogged it worked and Old Henry has been running like a champ till now. Are you in Michigan?
Hey what is the deal with the time stamp on these posts. It is 8:40 pm EST as I write this.

vapor lock is rare on gavity feed system.. though trash is common.

either rebuild or repalce your starter. even stores like tsc or napa have the starter.

as for the lift.. if the pto output shaft turns, then the pump should be turning and pumping. pul the inspection cover with the dipstick.

could be as simple as a sticky control valve.. there is a long arm from the top to the pump that moves a rocker in and out on the pump as you move the lever.. if the control valve sticks, the arm won't move or fully move.. see if it needs help. if that's not it, is there excessive leaks from t he top?

lastly, the relief valve could have blown out. it vaugely looks like a spark plug as it screws into the pump.. etc. has a metal cap soldered on it.
