850 John Deere clutch/drivetrain problem

Ok, the badges say it's JD but we all know it's Yanmar.
Last thing on my list before calling this guy to come pick it up has me puzzled.
When in low range in any gear and push in the clutch pedal the tractor stops like you had applied the brake as well, no roll at all. I did find while trying to coast down a considerable hill that if you push the clutch just until it releases it will roll some but push it to the pedal stop and the tractor will stop, it's not a violent stop with tires skidding and such. It reminds me of a hydrostatic drive stop.
High range is better but still not what it should be as it coasts to a stop while still on the hill.
It is a 4x4 machine, all wheels turn free when off the ground. I adjusted the clutch free play to 3/4" didn't help anything.

With it jacked up, put it in gear with the clutch latched down and see if all wheels still spin. I'm guessing something seizing in the area of the pilot shaft/bushing, shrowout bearing carrier, etc. It should spin the tranny, pilot shaft and clutch disk when you turn a driven wheel. This is assuming you can eliminate front wheel drive.

Thanks for the reply Norm, guess we'll have to wait to find out what it is. I told the man I wanted to look at the clutch and he immediately started poor-mouthin'.
It'll be back soon I suppose tho'.

I'm having the same problem on my 850 front wheel drive when it in low in range also.
Did you discover what the problem was.
