Narrowed down to these 2 units, both in FWD
Questions:

1. what is "sliding gear" transmission? Is it syncro? Manual tranny is what I want. Are the JD and NH both "sliding gear"? Do they "shift on the fly"?

2. JD is 4 speed with 2 ranges. It appears NH is 3 speed with 3 ranges. Is this correct? Any issues with dash mounted manual gear lever?

3. Dry shoe vs wet disc. Is there a substantial difference in stopping power? Maintenance?

4. Both units have "live PTO". I assume PTO runs regardless of the transmission and clutch?

5. I thought I read somewhere of an issue regarding the JD FWD connection/reliability. Any comments?

NH quote is TC30 4WD, 9x3 trans w/ R4 tires $10,800
$14,100 w/ loader

JD 790, FWD, R4, $11,440.

Reliability and resale are an issue. Resale nod I'm sure goes to JD. Any comments appreciated.

I'll give this a whirl.

Sliding gear tranny: no it's not syncro and no shifting on the fly with either tractor 790 or tc30. It's stop shift and go.

Ranges: Yes the 790 is 2 ranges with 4 gears for a total of 8 forward and 2 revearse / TC30 is 3 ranges with 3 gears for a total of 9 forward and 3 revearse. Issues of on the dash or on the floor for the shifter leaver is personal preferance both have a forward gear lined up with a revarse gear for help with loader work or change of direction.

Dry vs wet: both will stop you with no problem dry will wear out faster, wet will last longer.

Live PTO: The PTO will only spin when you put the lever in the operation mode and for the two stage clutch (both tractors) pushing the clutch down half way is for shifting the tranny, push it all the way down and it stops the PTO. rember no shifting on the fly with the tranny you will have to be stoped.

JD FWD: I don't know anything about this the only thing I have herd is the battery conections are no good.

the lowest price I've gotted on a JD790/419 loader 4x4 R4 tires with rear work light and bucket level indacater is $13,200 and that is way under what New Holland is asking for TC30/7308 loader there in the low 15's. but thats my end of the country prices will vary deponding where your at.

I'll chime in since I have a 790. You definitely must not only stop but give the mass time to stop turning when shifting. I read some time ago in this forum to count 5 before shifting and that seems to be correct for me too, but when shifting between forward and reverse this doesn't apply since everything is turning slowly anyway. I can shift between forward and reverse rapidly(backing RFM under trees etc). It takes a very long time for pto mass to stop spinning before engagement but this is only an issue once per session. I cut grass in Hi range 2nd speed and once underway control speed with throttle. The only time shifting is an issue is near the dreaded trees.I have heard many stories of dry brake problems in this forum but have had none myself. My last tractor had wet brakes but I rarely used brakes on either machine. I personally choose the Deere because it's front wheel drive tube was tucked up at an angle(good ground clearance for obstacle jumping)the NH and Kubotas tube ran straight which looked to be better mechanically but compromised clearance.

Got a question for ya, is there a way you can explain by words how thick/long is the grass when mowing in hi range/2 gear. Ive yet to try this tractor with mower combo working.

When I mow if the grass gets to deep say maybe 12"-13" tall and thick my little YM187 w/4' mower gags and I end up mowing not much faster that I can walk /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

opps just reread your post an your mowing with a finish mower I using a field mower.

My problem is not bogging down but failure of the mower to suck up grass my wheels have run over. I alternate between just letting some sprigs go and slowing to H 1 which seems twice as slow and doing a good job. This is when grass is near top of boots. I suspect you have much thicker grass there than I do. Everyone told me to get an RFM instead of cutter for yard work, but to my eye the cutters used on the sides of the road do a good job.BTW my wife does autocad, and just went from R14 to 2002 in one step with no tech support, the poor girl got an education in drivers and frustration. She say's she is just about ready to go back to the board method.

My god does she have any hair left on her head or has she pulled it all out, that was a good sized jump without tech. support. There are plenty of times I would like to put my foot through the monitor.
