Don't know if its possible or if it even matters.Just curious. Can I get more GPM out of my 790? Factory is like 5.6. My splitter has not bogged but is a little slow. Thanks JK

The only feasible way to do this is to add a PTO driven pump, and a dedicated reservoir equal in size to the GPM rating the pump to your splitter. This "upgrade" will cost about $500 or so.

So how slow is it?;)

I had a splitter for my JD970. I think the GPM for that tractor was ~8.0. It was ssssllllloooowww... I didn't use it much as a result and it was one of the first things I sold.

A dedicated, self-powered splitter was much faster and I could then use my tractor to haul the rounds and the split wood afterwards.

The full stroke on that thing takes 10 to 15 seconds,Depending on the RPM. This is fine for me by myself, keep the pile close, don't let it get higher than what your splittin. I've rolled through some wood with it. Just would be nice if it were a whisker faster. Still Happy, Happy New Year

Your question got me to thinking. I wonder if the pump from a 990 would fit? It appears to have the same mounting. The lines maybe would need some tweaking. I am not sure, but it might be worth looking into. The 990 is rated 8.5 gpm versus 5.4 you have now. That would be quite a difference. The 990 runs higher pressure too, but that is regulated at relief valve at scv or rockshaft, so that won't change by swapping pump alone. Has anyone else looked into this?

I had that thought - swapping in a bigger pump - (especially since alot of JD components are "cross platform").

Didn't want to get into a "domino" situation.. with differing line sizes, etc. Example; with the 300CX FEL mounted on the 970-1070 and 990 there's a flow restrictor that is required.

But, with the Yanmar engine series, I wondered if the pump from say; a 35-3720 wouldn't bolt right up -

Food for thought... but, as noted, I didn't have alot of luck with my 970 (pretty sure the gpm is very close to the 990) and a logsplitter.
