Talking to a JD dealer today about a 790 tlb w/ r4's. quote given is right at $20,000. 60mnth financing @ 6.9% & no interest or paymnts for 180 days. sound good? any known probs or things to watch for on 790. comparing brochures, the only thing that seems different from most other brands is the brakes are dry shoe. Is this a big deal? also, trans just says gear 8frnt/2rear. is this the type trans where you have to stop completely to chng gears or is that even a big deal. . I was looking at late spring or early summer buying something & the 180 day thing really got my attention. One more thing, someone said they were discontinuing the 790/990. is that anything to be concerned about. any info appreciated

You're getting a backhoe with this machine? Then $20000 ought to be about right for a quote, assuming you can knock about 10% off during the final negotiations.

Dry shoe brakes won't last as long as wet shoe (so I've read), but they stop the tractor quite well.
That collar shift transmission does require a complete stop to shift gears (although I've shifted prior to a complete stop). 1st and reverse are inline, so it's OK for loader work, but you won't break any speed records. That's a two range gear box, so you have 1st Low (about .7 mph) and 1st High (maybe 6 MPH) along with the corresponding high/low ranges in reverse.

As far as discontinuing the 790 and 990... Both machines are built by Yanmar. Deere is ending it's long term business relationship with Yanmar, so I wouldn't be too surprised if those two tractors go away in a year or so. That's just my guess, however. It also depends on if Deere can develop lower cost models to replace them. However, Yanmar has built a lot of tractors for Deere over the last 25 years. A lot of those machines are still in service so I cannot see Deere abandoning all those customers (as far as parts go). I don't think I'd worry too much about that aspect.

I think the 790 is a great tractor. You should make sure it fits you though. For some guys it is a cramped operators area.Make sure your right leg will not bump the loader control very often. Get the tires loaded ! I wouldn't worry about it being discontinued. The support is there and will be in the future. As for the gears, thats just your choice, anyone who has been using older tractors is use to it. I pull into a pile of material and push in the clutch to control the depth and while its in ,you pull back on the gear lever and your off.I think if you decide on that 790 and talk to the dealer when your ready to do it, you can get a little better price.

Considering retail is around 22,600 w/out any labor for installation on loader or backhoe - I would buy it. Dealer margin on the 90 series is not much on the tractor itself. Another 10% off I would say would be out of the question uness someone is in the business for rolling machines out at or under cost /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you're a real good double clutcher you won't have to stop to shift, otherwise yeah, you gotta stop.
i had one and liked it but it had way more power than weight which sets up a whole bunch of problems. usually it's the otherway around, more weight than power.
get it with loaded tires, full set of wheel weights, front weights and rear weights. The loader is kinda anemic too.

I'm curious what the fel & bh weight. i would think they would add quite a bit. Keep in mind I've never even driven any tractor. Are these standard like a car, meaning you can stall them out or geared like a riding mower, meaning you can pull out in any gear? Any other pros or cons?

More like the riding mower (do they still make geared riding mowers?). You select the gear for the job and start out in that gear.

As far as "pros and cons", I'm assuming you're referring to the gear transmission. Well, on the 790, you do have to come to (almost) a complete stop to shift. Undoubtedly, a hydro would be a bit quicker. I'm never in that big a rush, so I don't mind the extra 2 seconds or so it takes to shift (if that much time). I'm also the sole operator, so I'm not worried about some cowboy burning out a clutch.

In addition to the 790, 990, Yanmar builds 2200 series
and the small frame 4010, 4110 and 4115. Also all of
the small compact tractor engines are from Yanmar...

If I remember correctly the reason for Yanmar pulling out
of the American market was because of the tie up with'
Deere. If Deere an Yanmar sever their ties, I wonder if
Yanmar will return to the US market as they have a big
following in gray market tractors...

Gunfighter:

I think you remember right or at least it's the same story I've herd for years, and my understanding is that Yanmar and John Deere's agreement has almost run it's course, and if I'm a betting man I would bet you will see Yanmar inter the market place in the USA again in the not to distance future.

Look at it this way, they still have a dealer network in place and it wouldn't take as much effort to get it rolling again.
There name is still well known from when they used to sell here and in big part to the gray market tractors.

I think they could grab a nice part of the market place very quickly and give the "big 3" a good run for there money. Could prove to be very interesting.....

God knows I would love to have something like the 336D/power shift from back in the day. Me thinks I would almost run to trade my 790 in on something like that.
