Earlier this year our church received a load of topsoil. I arrived with my 2210 and another member with his 770 (not all that different than a 790) and we proceeded to distribute the load. Well, it was no comparison. The 2210 ate the 770s lunch almost to the point of seeming like a 2:1 ratio. Now I've got to tell you, I'm a big 750/770/790 fan, but the ease of using a hydrostat (even on a less capable tractor) is light years more than the manual way.

I had a 2000 model 790 and sold it last year. It was fine for most things I did, but very slow for loader work. The reverse nob is in a bad location, and the tranny is not sychronized at all, I just found the whole setup awkward for direction changes.

Went shopping for a new tractor recently and I bought another gear model, but with full synchro and shuttle shift, I'm probably twice as fast now with loader work.

I've had my 790 for several years, it fits my needs well and I really love the little tractors.
But I'm not sure I'd want a 790 if I was doing a lot of loader work, a lot of gears shifting
can be a real nuisance...

Well, after digesting all the suggestions here, and sleeping on that, I've decided to wait. I finally realized that I do indeed love my hydro, and would be very disappointed with a gear tractor for my applications as you have all said.

I'm going to continue with my 2210 - getting the low-profile rake for it, plus a King Kutter tiller (XB series). Now that more manufacturers are making implements for the sub-cut, I will be fine with what I have for now.

When/if the business grows more, I'll work toward a 2520.

Making important decisions that can lock you in for many years --- well, sometimes the best thing to do is sit back and re-evaluate.

You know best what will work for you right now and where you will likely go in the future with your business and how any tractor will fit in with that plan.

Best of luck with this move.

I got rid of my 4100 (gear -which were replaced by the 4110 models) for that very same reason. I loved my gear machine, but it really offered no value to me in a commerical environment because of the speed advantage HST has.

AS I look back, the speed advantage is incredible and you have to see it to believe it.....

anyway you can find plenty of 4110, 4115 slightly used (or larger) with HST and you will save $$ in the process. If you are doing commerical work, you will lose time and money with a gear machine. At least thats my observation and conclusion based on my experience so far.

Ahh - had to stop at my dealer for some parts Saturday.
While there, I talked with him about my hesitation of the gear machine vs. hydro.

He is easy going - never pushy - and understood.

But, he said he came up with a price with my trade....

The 790 MFWD, w/300 loader, iMatch, and 6' rake - 12 hours on machine.
My trade is 2210 2/62C deck and 210 loader - 245 hours.

Difference would be $3500.

Has me thinking about it more now........

NICE deal :) I had a 790 for about 6 years ,It was a very nice tractor. I traded up to the 990 only because my front bucket ( 70 ) had a hard time dumping into my F 450.

I guess the first question is, are you happy with your 2210? Does it accomplish the tasks you're interested in doing? If so, then why trade?

That said, I think you'll like the 790. Learning to operate gears takes about...5 minutes and, unless you're doing a lot of loader work, you won't miss hydro. Getting good with the 2-stage clutch will take a little longer.

How are you going to mow those 4.5 acres now? Are you planning on getting an RFM?
