790 Delivery

Hello all. Just took delivery of 2001 JD 790 with a 70 model loader. It only had 530 hours on it. It's an early model with the 30HP 90 CI Yanmar 3TNE84 engine. I got it from Valley Implements in Newberry, IN and they were real nice to work with. My other tractor is a mostly restored 1946 Farmall B, but there's not much you can do with it except ride in parades and go get the mail at the end of the lane. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/new/laughing.gif

Great looking tractor!! Of course, I'm partial to the 790's lol. Mine's a 2001 model and I bought it used as well, from the 2nd owner, and have had it over three years now. I really like it, the only real knock on them is they are a bit light and the tires tend to lose traction and spin out quicker than most other 30hp models.

In case you are interested, I have a couple threads archived on this forum where I installed an ammo box on the right fender to store tools in, and also another thread about adding a chain bucket on the right hand side of the loader mount. Pretty slick job, if I say so myself. I am about to another thread soon for a chain saw carrier, once I get it finished up. I think it's pretty slick too. The reason I mention this is you may want to add some of this to yours sometime.

Nice find! I still have fond memories of the hours I put on my 790 and a few of the mod's I did to it. Great product. :thumbsup:

As long as we are talking mods and tool boxes.....here's the one I put on my 790....and I wish I had it on my current tractor.

Just drilled four holes in the bottom of the box & two 3/16" x 1" straps under the loader frame, clamped them together, straddling the frame.

Also made a plate to bolt beside the seat to hold a hammer & big screwdriver. Plate has tubes welded to the bottom to keep the tools from swinging. ~~ grnspot

Congratulations Hardtack! Nice machine. Curious, does your loader have the pin on bucket mounts or do you happen to have the quick attach castings? Someone wrote to me recently who has a 70 loader with the JDQA mounts, reportedly from the factory. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the photos. Thanks for sharing your new acquisition here!

Thanks for all the roses. This 790 apparently had an easy life. It had a finish mower attached that wasn't included. The picture shown shows that I had just scrapped more paint off the loader doing some minor repairs to the gravel driveway that it had in its prior ten years of use. Yes, it does have the quick release system on the loader. Doubt if I'll ever use it thought. The only paint wear on it was where your heel would sit by the foot throttle and it was minor. The only other concern is that the left fender rattle a bit at low idle against the left floor pan near the hydraulics. Missing bolt, screw or mount some where. It also seems to have had the 500 hour checkup. Clear (not cloudy) fluids all around. I think I have a keeper...

Wife came up with a name to the 790. Since we have a RED Farmall B and now a GREEN John Deere, it's name is Harold :laughing:

I didn't realize how many 790 owners there were. I had one a while back but sold it when I when I moved. Was a good machine though:thumbsup:

That's pretty cool that it has QA bucket. This the first I've heard of that option on the 70 loaders. If you could take some pictures of the QA setup... with and without the bucket... I would love to see them.

Mechanos, Here you go. The first shot shows the release on the left upright, there's another on the right. The upright rest in a cradle. The release pin on the front of the loader.

Welcome........ I'm another 790 owner, purchased an '04 several months ago. This site is the best and there's lots of folks willing to help with whatever questions you have, remember there's no such thing as a dumb question.......

There are many things I've learned and I'd recommend you search and read one thread in particular, it's about 790 front axle problems when in fact it addresses the issue of shifting too much weight on the front axle when in 4WD and having adequate rear ballast. It took me a while to catch on to the fact that wheel weights help traction and rear ballast, as in a 3-pt Ballast Box helps shift weight off the front axle when using the Front Loader. I just purchased a Ballast Box and like many of the ideas posted especially the tubes/pipes for carrying shovels, etc. or better yet, installing a removable hitch to the rear of the box.

I know this picture is going to blow your mind. I asked for part numbers off of the QA brackets but never got an answer. Maybe a good sleuth can figure them out. Sorry I can't be of more help. You know I'd like to be.

I still have to wonder if that is an original setup or someone's well done conversion. I sourced all those parts from different loaders on JD Parts (except for the connecting bar through the boom pivot points... that would have to made since it's dependent on the boom width). Not exactly cheap, so I never got around to doing the conversion.
