790 2nd to 4wd conversion

Hi everyone, the title pretty much explains it. I just bought a cream puff 2006 790. I’m using it to drag a 60” roto tiller and a 1000gallon water ag trailer. Id like to know if there is a kit or the easiest way to convert it to 4wd. It looks like all I’d need is front axle, drive shaft and linkage for engagement. Maybe some other front end steering components. Not sure if it’s worth it or if I even need it but would like to know my options. Thanks!

It definitely could be done but it would require a little legwork in finding a parts 790 that maybe went up in a fire for cheap. Getting parts from JD would cost a fortune thats if they even still carry the parts since the 790 has been discontinued for almost 20 years.

IMO opinion if its a really well kept tractor keep it as it is.

The 790 was one of the best small tractors JD offered and being 2wd it essentially eliminates 25% of repair issues. If it has R1 ag tires in the rear it will pull just as good as a 790 4wd with turfs or R4. If you eventually want a tractor with a loader keep that one you have and save up for another for loader work where 4wd comes in handy. It sounds like a nice little unit and given its reputation it will probably give you a lifetime of service with very little investment.
