782 Restoration

Hey guys,

Just want to compliment everyone on this great site, it seems to be a wonderful resource for Cub owners. I am a new member and only recently found tractorbynet because someone actually linked our shop website to this website...happy to have found you. Anyway, just thought I would share pics of the 782 I brought home on tuesday night. It was traded in to us with a blown engine. It is all original so I hated to see it sold for parts. So after sitting in cold storage for 5 years it is now in my garage. I cannot wait to dig into the KT17 and get it going...should be fun. On a related topic, does anyone know of any product that I can use on the IH hub caps to get them shinning like new? Overall they are pretty good, but do have specs of surface rust.

I see your 782 is IH built so it should have the KT17 series 1 motor in it and it's not worth rebuilding. There were some oiling issues with that motor so they replaced it with the Series 2 motor. A lot of the series 1 parts are now nla, so I'm not even sure you could rebuild one. Your best bet is to find a KT17 series 2 motor or a magnum 18 motor for it. They are a lot better motor.

Thanks for the input, you are correct, it is the KT17 series 1. I am well aware of the issues of the series 1, and while the series II or the magnum would be much better choices I am a sucker for having everything original. As for parts, I have most of the parts for the overhaul including the cam, which I just recieved Saturday NIB from a surplus parts warehouse. After its rebuilt I have to make sure not to move anywhere with hills.
