Yeah, break it off, unless your aim was to grow some seed.:D

Man, those potatoes look great. Mine have jumped to 3 times their size since I posted the picture just a day ago. Amazing growth. Maybe I asked you earlier, Duffster, but what kind of 'tater did you plant?

Red ones?

I will have to look at the bags, I planted three different varieties plus some 'taters from the kitchen that where growing eyes.

I never had much luck with store bought left overs, 'cause they spray them with anti-sprout. Yeah, I planted red ones too. Too many. :D Next year I will try some bakers as well. The wife only really likes red potatoes.

That is what I always read was not to plant store bought taters but that is all my FIL planted and he has really good looking plants so I guess I will see. Just thought it was a shame to waste them.

Anything else I need to know about growing taters?

It's been so cold and wet here that nothing wants to grow except weeds. Here are some pix of our garden from tonight.

All of these plants are three weeks old. Things started to sprout and then just stopped. The pix are garlic, radishes, corn, and peas. We only had three peas even sprout.

Cyril, I can sympathize with you on getting peas to grow. My sweet peas sure had a rough life this year and they are on the way out. What I've had the most trouble with this year is blackeye peas (cowpeas/southern peas). I bought two packets of seeds and planted them early. Of the first planting, only one plant came up in around 160' of planted rows. So I go to the feed store and buy bulk seeds. After re-planting, I had a sprouting of maybe 1/3 of the seeds; pretty sparse. So, when I came home from vacation, I went to Walmart and bought a 1 lb bag of dry blackeye peas. I filled in between the growing plants with hand planted seeds from the grocery and within three days every pea I planted is sprouting. It's amazing! This makes three times that I've had tremendous luck with bags of grocery store beans and peas when the seed varieties failed.

I think there are a lot of old/bad seeds floating around on the market. That's also true for yard grass seed. I started to buy a 50 lb bag of grass seed for my lawn this year and discovered that the seed inside were from 2007 when I read the label. It said that in several states the seed could not even be sold past October of 2008. Too bad Texas doesn't have a similar law. After two years old, I'd bet at least 1/2 the seed won't germinate under perfect conditions.

Water. A potato is something like 94% water, as are most vegatables. Side dress in a few more weeks with compost, if you have any. They'll pull a lot of nutrients coming off the blossom.

Hi Jim,
How was the trip home? Did you guys drive or fly? Anyway, back on subject. My wife is cheating with her veggies. A few years back I bought a starting pad (heater) for starting grape cuttings and she took it over this year for starting her veggies. Her stuff is all still in the house in front of the sliding glass door and growing like crazy. She's on a kick to try to grow "giant" stuff this year. Atlantic giant pumpkins and some giant corn that's suppose to get 24 feet tall and get 18" long ears. The corn seads (curnels) were a trip as they were the size of quarters.

That is just normal corn around here.

Cyril, we drove the whole way, 5000 miles almost exactly by the time we got home. We had a fantastic trip and saw most everything we wanted except for Crater Lake (snowed in) and the high pass over the Sierras (closed).

I'm attaching a picture of my garden from last Friday. This morning we picked beans for the second time and I picked 5 tomatoes. My wife picked 6 straight neck yellow squash, three large zucchinis, and pulled several large green onions. Our little garden will soon be in full production.
