7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

Does anyone know the difference between the above two decks. One dealer says they are interchangable fitting the 4110 and the 4200 series tractors. The other dealer says they are different. The attachment kit I am sure would be different but the deck itself looks quite similar. Anyone have a 7 iron deck on a 4110? If the 7 iron will work I would like to buy the better model.

Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

Joe, I think my 72" 7-iron weighs as much as a 4110. Be careful - probably best to use the deck JD recommends for the 4110. There is a definate difference in the 7-irons compared to even the JD commercial line as far as weight. I know the mower axel guy is creating a new solution as well for the 7-iron line. Good luck finding the answers.

Mike; The jd book indicates both decks weigh 325#. Don't know how this is possible but that is what it says. ( 2005 commercial & consumer equipment purchase guide )

Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

Maybe the commercial one is the 7-iron one then?? Maybe the other green 72" deck I looked at was not the commercial one. I thought there was the regular yellow and the commercial green for the 4X10 series in 2004. I could be wrong. Can you use the commercial deck on the 4110? I am encouraging the use of the best proper deck to avoid inconsistent mounting and the jimmy rigging. I say that now but last month I was the one adapting the 300CX hydraulic lines to work on my 300X loader /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Let me know if I can help you out with any info on my 7-iron MMM.

Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

Thanks Mike, I guess it is the farmer from within that had to weld or improvise because going to town for the new expensive parts cost a days labor and a months profit. I'm all for buying new attachments but what I don't like is buying a new deck ( for premium dollars ) and then buying an attachment kit plus a front mounting kit. $2400 for a rolled piece of iron with a small gearbox, three spindles and a belt should include everything to cut grass. My neighbor just bought 3 zero turn mowers with 20 plus hp motors for $3000 each after incentives. I like John Deere equipment but I have to draw the line someplace. My dealer also quoted $1000. in an attachment kit for a 3k snowblower. Like the Harley Davidson group.... they will loose their followers shortly. My brother just purchased a new New Holland 125 hp tractor. He has 4 green tractors. He said the price gap was just too large. The NH is preferred by the operators... JD may have just lost an account. The loader and the MMM are the only engineered attachments I need green. That nice cat #1 rear hitch will grab any color.

Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

The JD 4110 takes only the 54" and 60" HD mower decks. They weigh about the same as the 7-Iron decks of the same size. The marketing name "7-iron" refers to the 7-guage steel used in the deck pan itself.

I have a 60" on my 4110 and a 7-iron on my JD F687 Ztrack commercial mower. The major difference is the "depth" of the deck. That is, the 7-iron is a 5-1/2" deep pan front to back, side to side, and the 60" deck varies from 3-1/2 or 4" on the trim side (left) to about 5-1/2 inches on the discharge (right) side and along the full length of the front half of the deck in a wide and deep "channel." Both decks are built to take a ton of abuse and I would consider the 60" to be "commercial" grade. Never heard of a gearbox problem on any of the JD decks except the noise on the early 62Cs. The newer 62C and 54C are the lightest of the decks.

Even though the deck pan material is heavier on the 7-iron, the weldments, support features, drive shaft, and attaching gear is the same or actually heavier on the JD "standard" decks. Pros like the deeper deck because it can manage a heavier load of clipped and airborne grass and still maintain a good cut at a higher ground speed.

I would say the 7-iron does give a slightly better cut because the blade tip speed is higher on the F687 than the blade tip speed of the 60" under my 4110. I have never had a problem bogging or a complaint about the 60" standard deck. I think it is possible that the 7-iron is not designed to fit the 4110 because the depth of the deck would cause an even greater problem with ground clearance under the 4110. As many of you know, the 4110 doesn't lift its MMM very high.

I posted the first pic in another thread for another topic, but it shows the quality of cut of the JD standard 60. The second pic shows the depth of the 7-iron on the F687.

Quick edit: The 7-iron deck under the F687 is the 54" deck and I have the mulching kit installed on both decks. The 54" 7-iron deck under the commercial Ztrack is the exact same 7-iron offered for the higher numbered CUTs but obviously with different weldments and mounting schemes. The gear box is the same.

Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck

Thanks for the info Big Pete. I knew there was a reason but I wouldn't let it go until I scratched out a why ? Sales persons I met didn't have a clue. No one seems to stock any for comparison. Thanks again..jr
