Re: 7 Iron deck vs 60\"MMM deck
The JD 4110 takes only the 54" and 60" HD mower decks. They weigh about the same as the 7-Iron decks of the same size. The marketing name "7-iron" refers to the 7-guage steel used in the deck pan itself.
I have a 60" on my 4110 and a 7-iron on my JD F687 Ztrack commercial mower. The major difference is the "depth" of the deck. That is, the 7-iron is a 5-1/2" deep pan front to back, side to side, and the 60" deck varies from 3-1/2 or 4" on the trim side (left) to about 5-1/2 inches on the discharge (right) side and along the full length of the front half of the deck in a wide and deep "channel." Both decks are built to take a ton of abuse and I would consider the 60" to be "commercial" grade. Never heard of a gearbox problem on any of the JD decks except the noise on the early 62Cs. The newer 62C and 54C are the lightest of the decks.
Even though the deck pan material is heavier on the 7-iron, the weldments, support features, drive shaft, and attaching gear is the same or actually heavier on the JD "standard" decks. Pros like the deeper deck because it can manage a heavier load of clipped and airborne grass and still maintain a good cut at a higher ground speed.
I would say the 7-iron does give a slightly better cut because the blade tip speed is higher on the F687 than the blade tip speed of the 60" under my 4110. I have never had a problem bogging or a complaint about the 60" standard deck. I think it is possible that the 7-iron is not designed to fit the 4110 because the depth of the deck would cause an even greater problem with ground clearance under the 4110. As many of you know, the 4110 doesn't lift its MMM very high.
I posted the first pic in another thread for another topic, but it shows the quality of cut of the JD standard 60. The second pic shows the depth of the 7-iron on the F687.
Quick edit: The 7-iron deck under the F687 is the 54" deck and I have the mulching kit installed on both decks. The 54" 7-iron deck under the commercial Ztrack is the exact same 7-iron offered for the higher numbered CUTs but obviously with different weldments and mounting schemes. The gear box is the same.
