I probably have close to 550-600 mowing hours on my 60-inch 7-Iron MMM, and the OEM belt still looks excellent, I have only needed to retension it twice in eight long mowing seasons. I think one of the reasons for the long service life is because one of the TBN members advised me to remove the two belt covers, which makes it easy to use a power blower to blast off the grass and other debris that covers the deck after each mowing job. Not sure if the member who gave me the advice is still around, or if he will see this, but I sure appreciate the advice you gave me so long ago.

I'd agree with removing the belt covers. I use a air hose with long wand to always blow the debris off to get rid of dead and wet grass, etc. Very rarely wash the deck off as a blow dry seems to keep it quite clean. Mine are 54" decks but 600 hours isn't (hasn't ;) ) been an issue. Mine have spring tension on an idler, so don't have any re-tension needs.
