add to this the states that let you up the tag weight and pay more money, even if the tow vehicle really isn't up to it..

The info is partially correct, 6000lb axles are 16" load range E tires with 8 lug,not 6. 7k axles are 8 lug also,but load range F tires 3540 a tire..Ive never seen a 6 lug 6K axle yet.6 lug is 5200 only.

You are correct. I messed up typing. It should read 5.2K are 6 lug. 6K and 7K are 8 lug.

Both my bobcat trailers are 12k GVW with 6k, 6 bolt axles.

They do make 6 lug 6K axles but I would guess you have 5.2K axles and they are allowing 1,600# on the tongue. Not saying this is 100% true because of different tires and such.

On typical radial tired campers, boat trailers, ect this seems to be the case due to tire loading.

Thats a typical move.I was at the local fair this summer, and i seen a few trailers with 7 ton axles with GVWR tags of 15,600lbs.I asked the salesman why they were rated so high,he said the tongue weight....gives the owner a little more legal capacity as long as he is loading it right.

new NHTSA regs 571.120 as of 6/15/08 says the trailers GAWR must match the trailers GVWR plus the hitch weight. Prior to that date RV manufactures were installing axles that equaled GVWR minus the trailer hitch weight.

TX DOT (commercial) got me on a 36' GN flatdeck/3500 DRW Chevy towing with a 29k GCW plates. The GN had no GVWR tag. TX DOT went under the trailer and got the axle rating. Luckily all three axle had tags. They could have put me in the impound lane but the DOT guy was nice and said to have the mfg send me a GVWR tag. These guys see this all the time as he even gave me the trailer mfg 1-800 number. :D

My last three trailers had 8k axles. I had the dealer derate the trailers GVWR for my purposes. The dealer or owner can request a lower GVWR tag. Allows a lower GVWR when purchasing combined plates plus a better/heavier axle/hubs/brakes/etc for long time service.

That could but I think they are 6k axles. I will have to double check.
