Hi all,

I have been tinkering with a '97 6x4 Gator and it's running pretty well, although after adjusting the idle speed/mixture, it still runs very rich.

I plan on overhauling the carb and perhaps changing the main jet to the high-altitude jet offered by Deere.

Can anyone tell me if the jets on these carbs are stamped like other carbs? The Gator has been here (in Albuquerque, 5300' MSL) all its life and it wouldn't surprise me if the original configuration included the high altitude jet. I just have to take it apart to verify what I have.

Thanks for any help,

Steffan

I've torn apart many carbs and most all of them are stamped with at least something. There is typically only an idle speed adjustment on carbs like that and no mixture adjustment. That's controlled by the position of the throttle blade in the venturi. If it's still running a bit rich, a stuck float valve is usually the culprit......especially if it sat with fuel in it for any length of time. Pull it apart, soak and clean everything. (any and all passages) Should be good after that.

Thanks PS,

The previous owner was certainly guilty of letting it sit for long periods of time, so carb condition is certainly suspect.

I will be curious to see how the main jet looks and if possible, to substitute the high-altitude jet provided by Deere.

We'll just have to see.

Thanks again,

Steffan
