6640 PTO

From the NH parts diagram I see there are 3 PTO setups....fixed speed, manually selectable and shiftable. Has anyone converted from one type to the other or perhaps know whats necessary to do so? Its not clear from the parts diagram whether the conversion can be done by going in from the back or the tractor has to been split.

Got an answer from my dealer...the PTO isnt convertible from one to the other b/c the housing is diff....at factory only option. Just in case anyone is interested to do this. I was looking at a tractor w/ a 540 PTO but the tach also has a 1000 rpm mark too.

Some units are capable of swapping the pto stub in the rear, and thus change between 540 and 1000 rpm . My 7610s is like this.

Right...it seems this tractor was built in one of 3 ways: unchangeable (PTO speed is fixed at a single speed), manually changeable (like yours...pop out a snap ring and flip the PTO stub changes PTO speed)) and shiftable (where the speed change is done via a shift lever from the seat). In the shiftable version its not clear if there are 2 PTO shafts on the rear end or the stub has to also be changed out. The one Im looking at is the fixed speed type and I wondered how difficult it would be to change to the second type. It seems the answer is 'it cant'.

I'm surprised they made so many options.. seems the 'swap' option would have been a good base design that would work for either.

Ya I know. Dont know how the variations fit into the S, SL and SLE scheme but I suppose theres some relationship. Also odd about diff housings depending on configuration. Guess at that time it was cost effective.
