We purchased two new front rims from our dealer for our 6640 last Spring when we purchased new tires for it. The old rims (original) had rot/rust on them so figured rather than have a problem with that we purchased the new rims. While spreading manure in two wheel drive the new right front rim sheared the loops off earlier this spring. All the bolts were tight as I had to use a 3' breaker bar to get them off.
Talked to parts at the dealer and the rims are only under warranty for 6 months. I ordered another one at over $400 with shipping. It was delivered with fine red rust coming from where the loops mount/welded to the rim. I checked the other original new rim still on the tractor and it has the same fine red rust. I talked again to the dealer about this and they checked with New Holland parts who said that there had been no other problems like this so.... I asked about welding the loops along the long end like the rear rims have but all they would say is that the four spot welds on each loop should be fine. Other than that no help.
We bought these new rims so we wouldn't have any problems. The old ones (original from 1992) still have tires mounted (and their loops) as I kept them for spares though badly rusted and had to use one after the new rim broke.
I don't want to deal with this again so I plan on welding down the long side of each of the loops (like on the rear rims on this tractor and all the rims on the T 4.75) on both the newest rim and the other new one still on the tractor even though it will mean breaking that one down again. Unless anyone has a better idea? Has anyone had a similar problem? or suggestions on rod type heat settings or other suggestions before I start doing this? Could there be something going on with the tractor that would have caused this?
