Clutch will only disengage after I put it in high gear, holding the brakes. Dirty plate?

I've been on it for most of the day so I will take a better look at it tomorrow. Seems like the plate is sticking, decrease in spring tension on the pedal until the clutch releases. Intermittent right now, will give it a better look tomorrow.

If it is just a dirty plate, what are the chances burning it off will solve the problem or is this going to haunt me until I split the tractor and replace the pressure plate and clean everything up?

Thanks

Could be rust on the splines if it has been setting awhile, i have had some success with a little spray grease, is there any oil from weephole ?, is weephole clear of debris ?, if the plate is dirty you may be able to burn it off, i have used a good dose of brake cleaner with some success.

Hasn't had a chance to sit much, I use it almost daily. The weep hole is clear, no debris or fluid. What's the best way to apply the cleaner?

If as you say it is a daily runner i fear this will only be a temporary fix if it works at all, remove inspection plate and try to get as much cleaner forward at the friction disc and flywheel area, having someone operate the pedal helps, run the tractor then repeat. If the area inside the clutch housing is dry it could be just plain old wear. Worth a try anyway

Not sure what the "if as you say" is about but yes it is a daily runner.

Took the cover off right after work, afraid the fragments of clutch resting on the cover didn't make cleaning look like it was going to do much. Did get it freed up, is working again but won't be working hard until I get it changed. Not a driveway job so I'll have to find a shop I can do it in.

Hi Mike476
You are correct fragments of the clutch is not a good sign, irregardless of what the problem is, the tractor will have to be split for a repair. Like mine, it has clutch issues as well. Hoping my baby will last till cooler weather.

Hi Billy, would like to wait but I have another 1000 bdft or so of spruce to haul out of the woods and need to make sure I get it out and milled before the gentleman who owns the mill needs it this Fall, would hate to see it set there through the winter.

Timing is bad, but when is it it ever good I guess.........

Hi Mike476
It sounds like you are going to be doing the repair yourself which is okay, however, I must make a suggestion. When you get into the clutch and cleaning away the fragments, always wet the dust and debris completely with water and soap with a spray bottle. The particles of the clutch are not something you want to breath into your lungs. Whenever I do a major clutch failure on any vehicle, I wear a painters mask similar to this one while doing removal and cleanup, and yes everyone looks at me wearing my mask like I am crazy. But I don't care what they think.... DeVilbiss Auto Refinish Products MSP524 Half Mask Painter ProRespirator, Medium
the main idea is to protect your lungs. Anything washed away from clutch and housing needs to be collected and disposed of. So its not left around to dry and become airborne. Protect yourself and your family. A long time ago in the 80's before everyone became aware of the asbestos problem. I replaced a clutch in Pontiac Fiero, my throat was sore for a month. I am sure it did not do my lungs any good. Take care of yourself my friend.

ps if you could take some pictures of what you find inside of the clutch, I would like to see them.

Sound advice Billy, although I hadn't wet the pieces down (wasn't expecting to see them there) I did dispose of them right away and washed up immediately afterwards, and thanks for the link.

I do plan to do the job myself if I can swing it, will certainly take some pictures and post them when I get a chance.

My clutch was not blown up as far as the discs coming apart, they were just oil soaked so I replaced them when I did the motor rebuild. If its any help, here is a few pics of the inside of the bell housing and the old and new clutch (dual clutch). Took the old clutch apart just to see what the inner disc looked like. TB
