I have a 660 Ford [600 series] I have only owned this tractor for 3 years and don't know the history - I recently replaced the distributor cap and rotor - the old rotor had a little medal clip that went in side the rotor shaft hole. I tried to put the clip into the new rotor, but could not see how it fit in the new rotor - here's my question - Do I really need the little metal clip? the old rotor seemed to be messed up in the shaft hole. I thought maybe the newer rotors don't need the metal clip?? Maybe someone can enlighten me on this subject. Pic is of the old rotor

You need the clip. Put your dust cover on than put the clip on the shaft, not in the rotor, than put your rotor on and dizzy cap.

My buddy kept having rough running issues until I told him about the missing clip. Without the clip your rotor has too much slop.

Yesterday, I took the distributor cap back off and reassembled the dust cover - put little metal clip on shaft - put rotor on shaft - put Cap back on - snapped in the two cap retainer clips - checked firing order. I did that about 2 times until I realized that the dust cover was sitting on top of the condenser wire, thus was not seating in properly. after that everything went well. I'm sure glad I got that all corrected before club tractor ride. Thanks to all of you.
