60 John Deere
I have a 1954 model 60 John Deere that needs new brake linings. I have attempted to remove the brake drums with a gear puller and so far have only succeeded in breaking it. After taking off the nuts, I sprayed the shaft with Blaster to loosen the drum. I did this twice over the course of 8 hours. Does anyone have a method of removing these drums that works?

Never have worked on one, but did find this on youtube. Should be similar, and if the seal needs replaced, looks like it would be a LOT easier with the pinion shaft removed, as shown.

Thanks for the lead. I did not want to remove the assembly from the tractor as he did because I thought you would have to replace the gasket between the assembly and the rear axle housing. He did not replace the gasket, so if I'm careful maybe I will not have to. Again, thanks for your help.

Heat the drum where it splines on the shaft with an acetylene torch.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have an acetylene torch, but if the technique in a previously reply (pull the brake assembly from the tractor and drop it on an oak slab, outer end of the brake shaft down), I will take the brake assemblies to a friend who has a torch.
