Mowing 60 inch mower, anti-scalp rollers

In preparation for grass cutting season I installed my 60 inch mower today. I have the cutting height set to 3.5 and the anti-scalp rollers are more than 1/2 inch above the floor with the deck in the lowered position. During a test run I noticed that the anti-scalp rollers turn as I mow. Is it normal for the anti-scalp wheels to turn while mowing? I know that the rollers do not have bearings. I went over all of the adjustments and everything seems to be adjusted to specifications.

Is the blades of the grass making them turn??

If they touch the grass or ground, that'll turn them, but I believe on a lot of mowers just the vibration of it running will cause them to turn rather slowly. I don't know of any good way to stop them from turning, nor do I see any need to do so.

The grass is very short, it just started turning green a day or so ago. The rollers turn very easy so maybe the rollers are just clipping the top of the grass but they seem to be rotating at a consistant rate. I am curious as to whether the rollers spin on other members 60 inch MMMs.

I know that I use to have a mid mount mower on a smaller Kubota that I had and all the wheels and rollers that were near to the ground or grass spun. Believe it or not I believe that the grass is spinning it. It isn't a problem. Mine did it all the time and I never had a problem with it. I might put a little oil on the shaft that it spins upon if that can be done. I know on mine it could. Just lube with WD40 or a little motor oil.

I know you adjusted per manual but you probably did it on concrete. I adjust mine with the tractor on level LAWN. The tractor will sink into the lawn a little thus causing your scalp rollers to contact the grass. I would set them higher in any case. J

TresCrows... I will pull it out on the lawn today to see if the rollers touch ground while parked on the lawn. I was concerned because I know that the rollers have no bearings and if they were constantly spinning they will wear in no time, even if they are not carrying the full weight of the mower.

The bottom of the roller is lower than the blades. Therefore the rollers will always be contacting the grass some, and will turn. Buy a spray can of lithium grease and lube the roller axles every couple mowings and they'll be fine. I'm on my 3rd season mowing (2.5 acre grass) and have not had any excessive wear.

After 700 plus hours the anti- scalp pastic rollers on my 60 inch mower have not worn.
