Utilities are shutting down coal because the EPA is making it too costly. NOx and SOx filtering systems needed to comply with the regs cost more than the plant is worth. The state of NC sued the TVA for being a public nuisance because of emissions that cross over the state line. The economic fallout from that lawsuit will cost them and the locals more than the accident at Kingston. That's kind of messed up, when you think about it. A legitimate and costly engineering mishap will cost less than intangible fantasies.
FERC is beginning to throw the flag. I read a report of theirs earlier about the destabilization of the grid over environmental legislation. Ill see if I can find the link.
Nukes are great. So is hydro. So is coal. The nukes need coal. You can't black start a nuke. There is no magical silver bullet to energy. There is no one size fits all. As trite as it sounds, a well balanced portfolio is best.

I do seem to recall the .... um... President stating that one of his goals was to shut down every coal power plant in the country...

Although I share your indignation...would you be complaining about higher taxes due to the higher costs of American engineering and construction? Or union wages? That would be the trade off...
I wouldn't be complaining...those tax dollars would be better spent for US companies and US workers.
