Someone I know has offered me a six foot wide set of disks for $425. Two of the disks need to be replaced. I have 2 questions:

1. The obvious one, is this a good price?

2. I want to use the disks to work in manure after spreading it on hayfields. Are disks enough to do this?

Thanks!!!

Rich, the answer to your first question is in the form of a question... How "heavy" are these discs? If it's the light duty variety like this, then it's just an OK deal

If it's a seriously heavy disc with quick angle adjustments then it could be a good deal.

I borrowed a very old set of discs from a friend last year. Weight is king and we estimated about 800# for his. Worked really well in my sandy soil, but not if it was bone dry. I'm not sure how much it would work manure in, but it will break it up and do a little mixing at the surface.

Hope this helps /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

One more thing Rich, replacement disc blades are about $10 give or take, depending on size. I broke a couple on my friends when I borrowed it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Rich,

Do you have a TSC near you? It seems to me they have light duty discs for $400-500. I agree with Rob on the weight issue, that appears to be key.

I was at a sale this weekend and my friend bought a 10' disc with hydraulics, all in great condition for $200. Two other 8' went for $175 and one 6' went for $50. All were in great condition.

You will want a fixed frame transport disc for what you want to do. There are a lot in Western New York that are 5 foot wide but bring over a $1000 because of the grape country, but they will work the manure into the ground better than anything you can get at a TSC or farm and fleet. You are probally referring to a two section disc which joints in the middle which really only works well on plowed gardens. Good luck
