I won't use the brand name but it's the major player in mowers. I used my Daughters brand new mower and what a gutless wonder. The blade was sharp but the mower wouldn't hardly go thru medium height grass. Isn't there any kind of research and development to assure the end user isn't stuck with this kind performance? I'm appalled I'll never buy "that brand". If would have said the brand I would been bashed for brand hacking. Is there a decent walk behind 21" mower that will actually mow lawn? What brand? bjr

I purchased a self-propelled 21" Honda back in August to replace a decrepit Snapper. I've been happy so far, but my lawn is far from lush.

I purchased a 21" Honda, with aluminum deck approx 30 years ago. I watched them take it out of the shipping carton, fill with oil / gas and it started the first pull. Been going strong ever since - zero problems. I don't think the spark plug has ever been changed. Still starts first pull every time even after sitting for the winter.

You should post the brand,so i (and others) know what to avoid or at least research further.

that said our honda self propelled has been going strong for something like 10-12 years. Last year i had to repair some rust on the deck, but the engines still strong and starts first pull

I have both a Craftsman and a older Yard Man 21" 6.5 HP mower. Both still run good and can plow through pretty heavy grass.

Every once and a while I need to drain the float bowl on the Yard Man (when it starts acting sluggish) and it perks right back to normal.

You must be talking about a Deere JX75. Mine does decent, but it's not the mower my Toro w/ the Suzuki 2-stroke was. If I can find another Toro 2-stroke nearby, the Deere is off to craigslist.

How high is "medium height"?;) I have what was the top of the line 21" Toro three and a half years ago with the 6.5 hp Briggs engine. It's been just great mowing my yard and my daughters' yards. But when a neighbor allowed his thick grass to get over a foot high, I found I could not use it in mulching mode because that would bog it down pretty quickly, and even in side-discharge mode, I had to go pretty slow to keep it from bogging down. So, in that kind of situation, it's not as powerful as I expected.

I have a 10 year old Snapper Ninja self propelled with a 5.5hp briggs signature series (if that actually means anything) and it's still going strong. I have a few spots where my grass grows extra lush. If I let it grow to long sometimes I have to let off on the self propelled to keep it from bogging down. But it sure beats the old MTD 3.5 hp pusher by a mile.

I have had decent luck with the JX 75 personally, but know several who have not. I personally really like the Honda mowers. They seems to run well, have nice features and are available in both homeowners and commercial lines.
