5w40 Syn - even if warranty calls for 10w30??

Hi All,

Planning our 50 hour service on the 1635. MF calls for 10w30, but I am not going to run dino past the 50 hour mark. Cannot locate 10w30 syn that is CJ4 compliant, since the tractor is Tier IV interim, I want an oil that meets or exceeds specs.

MY question, will running 5w40 syn harm the tractor? Even during the hot summer months?

There's plenty of synthetic 5w30. I use Mobil 1 0w30.

By specifying 10w30, they're saying 15w30 or 15w40 or 0w20 isn't allowed, but 5w30 or 0w30 is and are better.

Well, first off, Cold starting abilities, second of all, it is not cheap, runs cleaner, less deposits, tractor meets Tier IV, and ULSD is a killer on these things. Plan on keeping it a long time, and also want to take care of it. Have not run Dino in years, in anything, and DO NOT plan on EVER going back.

How would they know??? Once in a small diesel engine, the oil looks the same coming out, black and sooty. I can say I went with Mobil diesel synthetic in my diesel Gator (854 cc Yanmar) and in my little 2320 tractor (TNV series--similar Tier to yours) and it REALLY helped cold starting and fuel efficiency. I have been most well-pleased. I would do this in a heartbeat.

A long time ago GM used to warn specifically AGAINST the use of wide viscosity range oils in diesel engines.
Something about viscosity range extender "residue" accumulating under bottom rings and leading to ring failure - as I said, long time ago so I'm not remembering the details at all clearly.

It might be worth a search though.

MF (AGCO) does not have a problem with it, if they had their own synthetic oils, (like JD does.) I would buy from them.

Call your local oil distributor. Amazing what they have or can order. My uncle is one Shell. Many things are regional or special order. I find the prices right on line with Walmart or Auto Zone if not better... I even get 55 gallon drums of Windshield Washer Fluid from them to load tires on tractors for about 1/2 the price of gallon jugs.

I'm not even close to buying that. OEM's recommend specific viscosity oils; others are excluded by omission.

I work in the Ag equipment industry, but that doesn't make me a mechanical engineer.
