I was going to clean the fuel filter bowl today. I shut off the fuel valve on the filter and started to remove the ring. I had a small container to catch the fuel but it seemed like the fuel would not stop flowing. I made sure that the valve was in the off postion, when I turned it back to the on postion it run faster so I had that right. I must have lost over 1 litre of diesel before I put the filter back together because I was scared of losing my whole tank of diesel.
It this normal too lose so much fuel in a filter change? When I change the fuel filter in the past I don't remember losing this much.

No should just lose what is above the housing, then it should stop. Sounds like your shut off isnt holding.

If your tank is full it is possible the fuel was running back through the return.

Yes, if the tank is full of diesel, it will come back down the self bleeding air line for the filter, if you notice there are three lines going to filter, two large and one small at the top.

Koboman and David were right. I drained a bit out of the tank and there were only a few drops when I changed the filter. Thanks for your help.
