So, my '10 JD-5525 has always run like a charm. Low (250) hrs. Other day I noticed it seemed underpowered pulling up a hill with an 8' harrow....was headed back to barn to switch implements....when got out of cab, tractor at idle was spewing heavy black smoke from exhaust pipe....but seemed to be running fine. I shut it down and thought clogged air filter but checked out fine....so I changed fuel filter (first time since new) and added some Power Service. Then started dumping rain and I got busy with other stuff. Finally got back to it yesterday. Started tractor and heavy black exhaust was still happening. So I let it idle for awhile while I tended to some other things. Checked on it after about 10 min and found there was engine oil spewing out from under hood. Shut it down and waited 30-min for it to cool off. Can't find anything opened, other than dipstick was pushed out. Is it possible that something internal would cause oil pressure to get high enough to push out dipstick and then several quarts of oil?? Because that's how much was on the ground. Is bizarre to me. Tractor was still running fine, but something definitely wrong to me. Any ideas???

Where is the oil coming out up the engine? If you don't know, you need to find that out..

That's what I can't tell.....the only thing that looked open or broken was the dipstick taht was pushed out. After 15-min cool off, there was still lots of pressure inside the fill cap, which also seemed unusual. Hopefully, I can get mechanic from the dealer to come check it tomorrow. Just trying to figure out what might be going on inside that would be causing this.

I would say the muffler is plugged, many have baffles, and when they break loose they plug the outlet for the next chamber.
Just a thought!

I have seen equipment do that with a turbo problem. I don't know if that one has a turbo or not. If it does, that may be the problem and would explain the loss of power. Good Luck

edit: I checked and it does have a turbo. (you probably already knew that, but I didn't)

Sounds like your getting pressure in your crank case, is the oil comming out the breather? How olds the tractor, might have lost some rings..

Yup, that's really my question....what are likely causes of the over-pressure in crankcase? Tractor is not old....2010 with 350 hrs (i'd said 250 earlier but realized typo). Obviously still a young engine, which is why i'm stumped as to what could be happening. Thanks for the replies/thoughts.

You could have some blowby from the pistons, but unlikely with only 350hrs. Not impossible though. I am not sure exactly how the turbos are set up, but I saw the same thing on a Cat 980G loader several years ago. It was blowing oil and black smoke out of the exhaust. When the mechanics came out they replaced the turbo to fix the problem.

The engines I deal with at work are old Detroit 71 series diesels, some large natural gas engines, and a couple turbine engines. Not much experience working on turbo diesels.

Just a guess, could bad intake valve seals allow the turbo to pressurise the crankcase?
Does this engine have a crankcase vent that could be plugged?

Hope it's not a bad turbo!

Sounds like the turbo has an oil leak....
