yanmar 1610D
Hi..guys. needing a tiller for my 1610d (19hp). I cant find the 48" recommended size in my area, but have found a 53" and i think a 59" or 58" anyone had any exp running a slightly oversized tiller on their yanmar ? soil here is kind of a black gumbo = work it wet & you get rock hard clots / work it not too wet or too dry and it works up/fluffs real good. your input appreciated.

I watched a vidio on Everything Attachments - Skid Steer Attachments, Tractor Attachments, 3 Point Hitch Attachments, and Farm Tractor Implements. on a tiller today. The guy that demonstrated all the equipment seems to be pretty knowledgeable. He says and I agree for whatever it's worth that ground should first be broke with a turning plow before tilling. He was tilling in Georgia red clay. Having said that, I have a RS1300 tiller with a YM2002 (20pto hp). It will handle it but it is a full load. I have tilled after breaking ground and before breaking ground. Definitely more hp needed unbroken ground. I do till full depth and in a slow gear. Your going to be putting your tractor in a big bind in my opinion. I have heard of people removing outer tines. Don't know if that is a good idea or not.

hi.. let me rephrase my question & sorry for my inaccuracy on the sizes. my 1610d takes a rs1303 or rc1503. I cant find one within a reasonable distance from me for less than a $1000.00. I did find one the next size up for $700.00
the seller said it was in good shape, tines worn but plenty left, bearings ok ect.

The gentalman said it should work fine on the soil in my area if it has been plowed first or for retilling an existing plot. if I was going to use it on unworked ground I would probably have to remove a couple of tines and make a couple of passes to keep from bogging down and stressing the tractor/tiller.

Anyone have any experience running a tiller in a like manner?

In an effort to save three or four hundred dollars I dont want to damage my tractor and possibly cost myself more in the long run but if a slightly larger tiller will work ok if I take it easy, or remove a couple of tines I am ok with that. I have lots of time but not much money. I have a hard time paying 700.00 for a 30+ yr old tiller much less over a 1000.00. local non yanmar dealer here has a 4ft howse tiller new for 1080.00. yanmar dealers (2) that I have talked to say the 1610 wont run it because of the tine pitch. not enough hp. I value the input from folks on the board as I do not have much experience or anyone to get advice from.

Thanks Bob.

I would buy the larger tiller if it is cheaper and if you find out that it is a little too much for your tractor when breaking new ground just unbolt the outside tines. This would make the 53" tiller a 48" for less money. Just a thought.

Bob, not sure how much real help I'm going to be. You can see my equipment listed in my sig.

As a general rule, for the ground around here, I typ recommend a min 5hp per ft of tiller width. Soil is not clay/gumbo. My RSB-1300 is just about right for my garden plot. Used it on to reseed the pasture a few yrs back and being late in summer and virgin soil so to speak, I didn't have enough weigh to do much good. On the garden the tiller cuts like butter. But MANY yrs ago on the same garden using a 6' tiller with a MF 165D (~50hp+) the load was almost too much for the tractor. Used a Bolens GT, ~15hp, with a 3' ft tiller for many yrs and had to make many passes to get the bed ready for planting.

If your tractor can pick up the tiller without difficulty and you take small enough bites you likely can get by with this set-up. For me it would be too slow. If this is going to be a garden plot, after a number of yrs and with soil amendments, this combo may work well for you.

Oh, have a fond spot in my heart for Sand Springs. My grandparents MANY yrs ago lived near Hale Station (days when street car track ran down Charles Page.), right off Charles Page and just a little E of Sand Springs.

Bob ,I've got a 1610D and run a 1203 with it,that's because I kept the tiller when I traded up the 1510 to my 1610D.I've used it to till an acre of unplowed land .I've got the original rice patty twines and they cut it like butter.IMO I don't think you will have a problem with the 5' but as others have said you can always remove the outer twines. russ

I don't have a handle on the various tiller mdl's and thier respective sizes & could never find a source or post that listed them. lots of tiller post's off the search feature which, it looks like you could glean the info from, but a lot to wade thru.

Bought a tiller thursday. An RS1400 next size up? from the rs1303 which is standard for my 1610D. Drove to oklahoma city about a 115 miles from me. There is a yanmar dealer there that has what appers to be vn recons bulldog loaders, all yanmars are painted and shiney. all the tillers he has are 1000.00 plus tax.(has several) had 1 RS1303. Don't know about his rep.

The rs1400 was at an acerage on the way there. Guy grows wine grapes for the wineries that have popped up around here. turns out he imports yanmars. Repairs them as needed and sells them. His only advertisment is craigs list & word of mouth. he had about 8 there at this time. He said he services them, (filters/fluids) replaces needed hoses, belts, tires ect. Then uses them around the place till he feels they are sound and/or repairs any problems then offers them for sale. They have not been repainted. just touched up where/if nessasary. said he gets his parts thru fredricks. He also is a koyker dealer. He said he has no plans on getting another container at this time because the yen/dollar ratio makes for too little profit right now. (I asked if he might be getting any rs1303's anytime this year).

Back to the tiller. It is in great shape hasn't been repainted & paint is in great cond anyway and the tiller is real solid. No slop in the tine shaft or drive shaft. tines still have edges/angles and he says he changed oil and packed the bearing on the other end and has used the tiller in the ground, and it works fine. Paid 700.00 no tax. 90 day warr. (though not in writing) It was in such good shape & at a decent price. I decided to take a chance on it even though it is a little large for my tractor. Only diff I could see was that it is slightly wider and the tine shaft is larger than the RS1303. He seemed to think it would be fine. The plot I am tilling has been a garden for the last 20 yrs though I do plan on expanding it. I will see how it goes. If it turns out to be just too much for the 1610D I dont think I will have any trouble selling it for what I paid.

Thanks again for your advice/experiences.

Bob.

I have a 1610D I bought last year and the tiller I got with it was a RSB1401. I haven't used it much so I can't give you a real good read on how well it works but the little I used it it seemed to work fine.
