Hi,,,,I am the 2nd owner of a 5264D, I have had it about a year, and it has about 290hrs on it,has FEL,BB, 3pt mower, well I was digging into a pile and felt a shutter/jump, now it is doing it about every 5 feet, I kind of have an I dea that the planetary Sh__T the bed,,,,,,:(,,,,

I was wondering if anyone has had to pay to have these rebuilt, and how much did it set you back?,,,:mur:. I read about Hard and his drama,,,and a few others, but mine is an 06 (stickered), sold in 07, so 5-6yrs old, and I am doubting if CC will help:ashamed:,,CC had put a shift kit in it when it was 1 week old,,:tractor:is this something I should venture myself?.,,,I am a skilled wrench slinger,,,I wouldn't tear apart a transmission in a car,,but will do pretty much everything else.

Any Help is appreciated, I am in upstate NY (Hudson area),,I have one CC dealer about 30 miles away,,my JD dealer is 3 miles away.

I am not happy about this and may have to let it sit if it's a $3K:2cents: fix,,,,I only paid 6 for it,,,and may cut my losses :(:(

The 5000 series usually strip the ring and pinion gears. Not much cost in replacing the parts but very labor intesive pulling the transmission. The transmission in that tractor is no where near as complicated as a cars.
Drain the hydro oil.
Pull the floor pan, fender, rops etc.
remove rear 3pt assembly/rop mounting bar
remove the gas tank.
remove brake rods at the pedals so they slide out with the trans
remove all other linkages/hydro lines as necessary (take lots of pics for reassembly)
remove drive shaft/4wd shaft
put trans in neutral
put jack stands under frame in front of trans
unbolt trans
carefully roll trans back off the frame ( trans is tail heavy so have jackstand on standby)
once clear of frame remove brake rods - note that there is a left and right rod
flip trans onto right wheel
remove left wheel
now you can crack the case and it is self supporting on the right wheel. It is not necessary to remove the axles. It is necessary to remove the HiLo detent though.
Carefully crack the case
Once open you should be able to see the drive gears that are trashed
remove gears as necessary noting which side of gear is facing out so you can replace exactly as they were
From here you should be able to figure out what needs to be done. Basically all you should have to do is get the old gear pressed off the driveshaft and a new one pressed on.
The gear on the hydro shaft is just a clip on.
I like to replace any bearings in the immediate area of the damage for fear of metal shavings. I also replace the 2 oil seals when I remove/replace the hydro from the trans. This is a good time to replace any other oil seals that may be leaking badly.
Clean all metal shavings out of case before reassembly
Black rtv is used to seal the case halves.

Obviously I am not including every single step as its mostly common sense. Its a very doable project if you take your time and think things out. When in doubt, double check.

Good luck

Didn't Cub fix this problem at some point? I thought maybe they used a different grade steel or something.

This thing has been problem free to date,,,,,,oil is now leaking from the shaft seal where for the brake disc left side under the operators seat, taking it to the dealer today, not sure what I am going to do. there is a 5234 of CL for $4300 no implements,,if it is not much more, I may scrap this one. There is also a JD755 with FEL,BB,MM for $2600, if it is not a scam I will buy that,,,,How many hours labor is involved? (book)

I bought a 5252 (2wd with kohler engine) back in 2004. It came with loader and mid mount mower. I have really worked the snot out of the loader and never had a problem. My personal opinion is that the problem is caused when the wheels can't slip, the gears let go. From what I have seen most of the problems come with the 4wd models and some even with bar tires. Too much traction for the transmission. My 5252's tires would simply spin if I pushed it too hard, saving the gears.

Well,,,,,,I took it to "Green County Power equip",,,,Bill,,Nice Guy,,said 10 hres to open it and put it back together, and likely $300 or so in parts,,so about $1000 roughly @ $60/hr,,,It is what it is at this point,,,,he also said that CC is not going to help,,it is 5-6yrs old, and that he has sold a number of these with zero problems

CUB5K,,,,you are right,,I have really not had many issues with it and have worked it fairly hard this winter,,and I was digging in a pile with it in 4wd, and the tires slipped and then grabbed,,and that's when I felt the jump/thump,,I do have the bar tires also.

I read also from someone else,,that these are tractors that are simply not built for heavy service,,meaning you can't push them to do things that they may not be capable of doing. And that's "just what they are"

The dealer did say that it had had a shift kit put in it in 08,,,,the previous owner didn't disclose that.

I considered pulling it apart myself,,but I would have to do it in a dirt floor carport,,and decided that discretion would be the better part of valor in this case.

The one thing that does :mur:stink is that it is supposed to snow 6-12" tonight and that was my shovel:ashamed:

BTW the JD755 for $2600 on CL was for sale by someone in africa needing cash to get home,,,just had to send him the check:anyone:,,,I may be dumb but I am not stupid

Thanks for the help Joe

Sounds like you got a terrific quote on the rebuild. If I had found someone to do it for that amount I would have jumped on it.

Good Luck

Ok so it is finally back in ,my yard,,,,,total was $1395 includeing tax,,,actually about $1300, and believe it or not the pump gear didn't cause the problem, 25% of the gear that drives the 4wd exploded, and looks like it took out everything else.

It was expensive, but not as much as I was dreading, I know $1400 is nothing to laugh at, and have been better allocated, but it could have been much more. The dealer Green County power equipment was fair, and worked hard, it just took a while because of the parts chain.

HOPEFULLY I WILL NOT NEED TO DO THIS AGAIN , I tried to attach pictures but can't figure it out, if anyone wants pics of the gears, PM me

Now that you have that thing fixed...Sell it as fast as you can and buy a JD, Kubota, NH, MF, etc....It will break again and it will be expensive. Cut your losses.
