Maybe this is normal...maybe not. I have an 06' 5225 cab/air 5 cyl. On a cold start, be it 20 degrees or 60 degrees, at first crank, it starts at once, sputtering, and smoking for about 5 seconds...then cleans out and purrs like a kitten. My other 3 cyl 5203 NEVER smoked or sputtered on startup. The 5225 has about 295 hours on it and I have had it about 200 of those hours. It stays in the shop, out of the elements, just did the 300 hour service, still does it. whatchathink....normal or not?

I have no idea....one in every 10 cold starts, the white smoke wont go away, until you stop it,,,then restart. gone. Other than that, it runs great, has never stalled, I use conditioner at every fillup. Our diesel here is only 500 ppm sulpher, so I use Service Plus.

If it had 2000 hrs on it I would suspect leaking injector when shut off. Under 300 hrs I don't know, I would not think you would have a bad one already. I would ask the service mgr the next time you are at the dealer what he thinks.

My shot in the dark guess: injector or injectors are bad

That's pretty much how my 5225 starts too. I figured it was normal. Mine only has about 60 hours, so I really don't think anything is wrong.

Husky....I am going to post a short video of a cold start at 1/4 throttle tonight, and we can see if we have the same problem and/or normal start up condition.

Mine has never done the white smoke that you describe, but it usually blubbers a bit with black smoke and then clears out. Takes 3-4 seconds at most. When it's below 30 degrees, I try to plug it in for an hour or so, and that helps. Running the glow plugs for 10-15 seconds makes a difference too. I'll check out your video.

Well..... I went to record a video. I am sure I set the throttle a little more than I normaly do. The ambient temp was about 60 degrees. It smoked for a short 2 or 3 seconds, cleaned out and purred. Not what I have been seeing. Maybe I just need to set the throttle up a bit more. I used to start it at idle. I am going to try a few more cold starts at 1/3rd throttle and see how the new few starts turn out. I will let you know. Maybe setting the throttle at 1/3before starting helps to blow out whatever fuel is setting in the intake/combustion chamber. We will see. Husky..try the higher throttle setting and let me know how yours reacts. thanks.
