5205 JD Steering Cylinder

Went to JD and got a seal kit for the steering cylinder on my 2 wheel drive 5205.
Now I have no idea how to actually take it apart. Looks like a lock ring behind the big nut holds it all together? Is there a special tool to get to it?

it looks like you need a hook(probably) or pin spanner to remove that large nut, don't use a pipe wrench vise grips etc.. I don't see indents for a gland nut, so, it should be easy.. HYDRAULIC REPAIR TOOLS - Home

The attachment was taken from JD TM1792 hopefully it is what you need.

Got the large nut off with no problem. The snap ring is way in there, can't seem to get to it.

Mine is on a 2001 5205 and is a little different. those instructions say to push in on the piston "D" to expose the snap ring. Can't do that on mine. I guess I just need a different set of snap wring pliers, mine will not fit in the gap to reach it.

Yes! thanks! that is the diagram i was looking for. The snap ring is what I don't have the right snap ring tool to get to it. I am going to try one more time before I head to the JD dealer.

Okay, I was not responding to "push" so I soaked it in PB Blaster for a few hours, then hit it with the impact hammer and it broke loose! That was the problem. New seals in and no leaks!
