I was in the process of hooking up the brush hog & left the JD idling & all of a sudden it just quit...just like you turned a key off. It was a little low on fuel so I thought since it was parked on the hill it may have gotten air in the fuel so I put a full tank of diesel in it. I bled the lines and still nothing...just turns over. I checked the air cleaner for obstructions...nothing. I checked all the fuses and rebled the lines, even replaced the fuel filter...still nothing. I noticed the hose coming from the top of the fuel tank to the injector manifold was leaking right up at the engine. I cut off the dry rotted fuel line & reconnected solving the leak. I unhooked the fuel lines from the injector pump that lead to the injectors and turned the engine over and no fuel comes out of the pump. Shouldn't some fuel come out of there when the engine gets cranked? Seems to me it would. I reattached that line and unhooked the line leading from the filter to the pump and turned the engine over. Small amounts of fuel squirted out of that location. That's the wrong way though...that's pumping back into the fuel supply line. I can hear the solenoid click when I hit the key...so i THINK it's working. Anyone have any other ideas? Id drag the tractor to the dealer if I could get my truck & trailer in there to get it out. I've spent two days screwing with it and am out of ideas. I might mention the tractor has 117 hours on it...so everything is practically new. I bought it in 2002. I dont use it much. Help!

Check the fuses, often times a fuse will short out, especially if your battery cable is not well connected. Make sure cables are good and tight and then check fuses....good luck

I checked the fuses and the bat cables. Nada...

What stops a diesel from running? Fuel. What else can stop it? Is there a relay or something? I see 3 of them next to the fuse box but I have no idea what they are for. Very frustrating. Im not used to working on a diesel. If I cant figure it out I guess I'll have to pay someone to come out & work on it.

Not yet. My curiosity got the best of me and I had my mechanic disassemble the pump because I couldn't send it off to be rebuilt if I didn't KNOW it was bad. Ended up it was damaged. The calibration bolt (i think thats what its called) had broken off inside the pump and caused major damage. The funny thing is...looking at the break it's clear the bolt was over-torqued at the factory because only a small part of the bolt, at the break point, was shiny...like it normally is when it breaks. So probably what happened was whoever put the pump together tightened it too much and partially broke the bolt. Sucks to be me these days. If anyone knows where I can get a Stanadyne pump Model Number DB2-335-5647. JD wants $1300 for one...just cant swing that right now and I dont feel comfortable rebuilding my pump because it was damaged so bad.

Yikes!
I hate it when people even talk about pump troubles, much less have them!

Just wanna tell everyone thanks for your replies. The pump is in a box waiting to be sent off to the rebuild shop. The guy at the injection shop said AIR caused the bolt to break that is secured to the cam. He also said the scoring inside isnt a big deal because there is no fuel pressure in that location. Air...so that means...my advice to you all is to never let your tank get low and never let any of your fittings suck air...that goes for all of your rubber hoses too. If they're cracked...replace them. He said any amount of air will make the pump hammer air right in that spot and cause the bolt to break. I guess it was the fact that the tractor was sitting on a hill with a low level of fuel in it and air got into the lines. Anyway...I'll probably post after I get the pump back and I take the deere to the shop to have the injectors cleaned. Im sure there's metal shavings in the tank and the injectors now. Never again will I let that thing go below 1/2 tank.

I can understand the "never under a half tank again". Getting one running after a fuel outage is a royal pain in the backside. Usually takes forever, also!

I replaced the fuel hoses on my 5105 after 2 yrs. The originals were not fuel injection rated just plain Gates fuel hose, I replaced them with Gates "fuel injection" hose. The first time I changed fuel filters I got a lot of black tar looking crap out of the main filter and out of the bottom of the tank. I always replace both inline and seperator filters at the same time. This tractor is easy to get air in the lines when doing filter maintenance. I had to call JD once. The tractor was under warranty and I didn't want screw anything up. The injector nuts are under the muffler and hard to reach. The manual says there is a bleed screw on the side of the pump, I couldn't get fuel to come out of it. I mentioned it to the JD tech and he said that screw was head stop screw and that the manual was wrong. Anyone else familiar with this?
