5103 Stuck...Again

Okay, this is starting to get annoying and really make me regret not waiting 'til I could afford a 4520 4x4.

This is a pic of my 2nd time getting stuck using the BB. The first time I did this it was my fault b/c I had the teeth extended all the way down and wasn't using the draft control. This time, I had the blade just above the ground knocking down some high spots of loose soil. Am I doing something wrong? I was in B-2 at about 2000 RPM. Maybe it's just too soft to be working the soil right now. What do you guys think?

Soil looks workable to me. It's not clumping excessively and looks friable.

I'm not familiar with the 5103, but when I had my shuttle shift, I often had better luck in low range and a higher transmission gear.

But, your situation is the reason AWD works so well with CUTS and utility tractors.

Was that mound there before you got stuck?
If so I would have tried knocking it down with the FEL first and then use the box blade to do the "fine work".

Chip,
At what point did you realize you were in trouble and
might not be able to continue? did that box hit
the mound and just "stop"?
also, what was your reaction with the diff lock,
were you able to get that activated before you dug in?

if that mound was there, the idea of leveling that with
the bucket makes more sense, you would have had quite
a ride up and over something like that, which makes the back
blade even more clumsy.

did you have to use the truck this time?
or could you get out with the diff lock and bucket?

You might want to consider a pair of chains for the rears, especially if the ground is a bit soft. Just read somewhere else where a fella leaves his on year round and he says without any ill effects.

Had the same thing happen a couple of times with my 650 JD without 4 wheel drive with a BB. If I wasn’t watching how much dirt was piling up in front of the BB, it would mound like your photo and the tractor would get stuck. Not sure if that’s the case with you?

So why can't you just use the FEL and push your self right out of the hole backwards? Looks like its barely even stuck at all. I've had my 2210 buried front and rear to the axles and used to FEL to push myself out backwards 20 feet or more. It was only 6 inches at a time, but in 15 minutes I was out and on my way again.

If nothing else, when you pick up the 3 pt it should give you extra traction and that sucker should walk right out (before you are stopped).

Your not stuck till the frame is sitting on the ground, especially with a FEL on the tractor...

Maybe you need fluid in your rear tires. Looks like all the weight is on front end, causing rear to get light, thereby spinning and getting you stuck. If you don't want fluid in tires, hang some weight on BB.

Chip, take smaller bites. You are trying to move too much material at one time. You would have no trouble doing the task with a 4 wheel drive,but with 2 wheel drive you are just going to have to make more passes and take less material. As far as getting unstuck using the FEL.......... You can't or you will ruin your manure forks. Just work a little less material at a time. Dont' let so much build up in the box an halt your forward momentum. Once you get too much in the box your 2 wheel drive tractor is not able to maintain enough traction to pull the weight of the material.
