I have a 5103(2005). The fuel filter drain is located directly above the starter/solenoid, and there is also a spliced wire harness running directly on top of the solenoid. So if I open the drain prior to each use as the manual says, fuel will drain into this wire splice, over the solenoid/starter and connections. I've tried using a plastic hose to run the fuel to a container below, but the clearance between the drain port and the solenoid is only like an inch or so. Almost impossible to hold the hose in place and open the port. Anyone have any recommendations? Is it really necessary to open this drain that often? Thanks.

Absolutely not. If you want to check to be sure there is no water in the bowl, fine, then drain. To drain each time you start is ridiculous.

I tried doing all the startup checks by the book. I soon discovered that the pain of checking the fuel tank and also draining the fuel filter were unnecessary. I never encountered any water, I just made a mess with diesel fuel all over me, the tractor and the floor. I tried to catch it in a can, however, as you discovered, the drain on the fuel filter is a joke.
I have toyed with the idea of using rubber fuel line and a small clamp, clearance is the factor though. As you found, there is none to be had. I'm going to look at mine some more when I replace the fuel filter. I'm only at 28 hours after all this time of owning it. I know it doesn't need it to due to the hours. I'll probably change it after all the mowing this year.
