My 5065e is 11 years old and these have cracked, likely dry rotted. I would like to replace them without removing the tie rod end. It looks like you can loosen the jam nut, then turn the flats on the opposite end, unthreading the shaft from the tie rod. When you do this , the joint must separate. Will the polished chrome shaft slide into the power steering rack? Or must I have the front wheel off the ground so that the wheel can rotate away from the tractor? I don’t know if the 2 polished chrome shafts are solid through the rack or will they slide in and out independently? If anyone has done this repair, I would really appreciate any advice. I attached a picture of my cracked boot seal and a picture of a new one at dealer. Thanks

Part key #5 doesn't just thread out ? Missing why the chrome shaft needs to be removed, but may be not seeing the problem you face in the good pics posted.

The chrome rods are part of the steering cylinder. If you wish to remove the tie rod ends I suggest you jack up that side until the tire is off the ground. That will provide the necessary movement.

I don’t think the chrome shaft needs to be removed. It looks like part #5 is threaded into the tie rod? I know there is a ball joint located on the end of threaded rod. A Deere mechanic showed me one. I am just trying to determine if the weight needs to be off the wheel so the wheel can freely move out as the threaded shaft is rotated ? If I am missing something, I would appreciate the experience of someone who has replaced this boot seal. Is this possible without disassembly of ball joint? Thanks

No, the chrome rod stays in place. You can remove item 5 from item 6 and the rod without removing the tie rod end from the steering knuckle if you choose. You WILL need to jack the tire off the ground or you will fight the threads both coming off and going back on.

I've never replaced that boot/seal kit so I have nothing for you on that, other than I ASSUME it can be done. Why else would they offer the kit?

Rubber electricians tape works well for a temporary fix that can be extended.

Replace the entire joint.

Heck , they couldn't be more than a couple of hundred dollars each! ;-)

My dealer priced $540 per side. Mine don’t have any play on either of the 2 joints per side. It would be simpler to replace the entire assembly but with no play, I have many hundreds of hours left. I’ll keep them greased and should get plenty of time out of them
