John Deere 3020
Thanks and this is my 1st post!

I have a 2000 John Deere 5045e with just a little bit more than 900 hours that has started giving me an issue! After about 1 1/2 - 2 hours of running, it will start loosing power and start blowing white smoke from the exhaust! After it sits for a while and cools down, it runs fine again until about that same hour and a half to two hours! Any idea about what’s happening would be greatly appreciated! I’m not an excellent mechanic but I have done mechanic work on tanks and artillery while serving in the army! This tractor reminds me of a vehicle that we called “wet stacking”! NOT SURE about tractors though! Thanks in advance!

Could be a fuel restriction. Have you changed the fuel filter? Also does it have a secondary in-line filter for a fuel cooler that you may not be aware of.

I have changed the fuel filter but not aware of an inline fuel filter! I will check to see if it does! Thanks for the reply! I was scared it may be a cracked head or a head gasket…but not seeing any water in the oil at all!

I’d also check for fuel flow. When it does this remove the filter and turn the fuel back on, it should flow well. Also like already said make sure there isn’t a second filter. The lift pump would be another thing to check. The lift pump is a small pump that gets fuel to the main injector. You should hear it clicking when you turn the key on but don’t start it.

Dave….I don’t hear ANY kind of clicking when I turn the key on and not start the engine! You mentioned that I SHOULD hear a clicking sound? And the lift pump…what exactly does that do? Supply fuel to the main injectors…NOT the injector pump?

I don't think the 5045e goes back to a 2000 model, but an early model (tier two emissions) will not have a lift pump. Just a hand primer on top of the filter base, and it won't click. This system relies on gravity and the transfer pump in the injection pump for the entire supply. The absence of the lift pump does increase chances of the symptoms you describe.

You might consider investigating the flow directly from the tank, possibly draining the tank, removing and examining item #39 on this diagram.

It looks lije yours probably doesn’t have a lift pump.

I do see a part number 39 in the diagram Harry posted. It’s a strainer in the fuel tank. It could be that is gunned up and needs cleaned.

That filter/strainer in the tank is the route I went when mine started losing power , so I dropped the tank after draining it and knew right away after pulling the strainer/filter that that wasn't my problem, that's when I got to tracing fuel lines from the tank to the filter housing with a manual pump and from there up towards the radiator where I found a small in-line filter at the fuel cooler and that was what it was, on mine anyway, it's a 2011 5093E Limited, I'm not saying that yours has that filter but I would sure rule it out before I drained that tank.

Harry, I did go out and look at mine and you’re right…it only has the hand primer on top of the fuel filter base! I remember that because when I changed the fuel filter, I had to pump that to prime the system back up so it would crank! I will look into that strainer as well! I have attached a picture of my serial number so I may not be reading my year model right! I thought it was a 2000 year model!
